Barnsley have recently appointed Austrian head coach Gerhard Struber, who has outlined what he needs to do to succeed with this Barnsley squad.

Barnsley parted company with former manager Daniel Stendel in mid-October and took over a month to appoint a successor, as their search took the club across Europe as they looked for the best candidate possible.

Barnsley eventually fell on Wolfsberger manager Gerhard Struber, who leaves the Europa League to join a Championship relegation battle, with the Tykes currently rock bottom. Struber has an immense job on his hands to avoid relegation with a vastly inexperienced squad that are currently on a 15 game winless run, stretching back to the first game of the season.

When facing the media for the first time, Struber had this to say when commenting on his team: "I watched many games. The team is okay, but there are individual mistakes. I know what I must do to get rid of the mistakes. I see a big heart in this team, I am convinced we will change the results and performances."

With Sturber’s comments in mind, we take a look at TWO reasons why his assessment of the Barnsley squad is spot on.

They need to cut out mistakes

There is no surprise to see that Struber has highlighted the side’s tendency to make mistakes as a key area for improvement in matches. Their results under caretaker boss Adam Murray have been proof of that. The Tykes have performed much better in recent weeks but individual mistakes and naive defending have cost them valuable points and wins.

In their last fixture against Stoke City, Barnsley lost 4-2 and were outplayed but will feel like they could have prevented all four goals quite easily if they cut out mistakes and were wiser in certain situations.

The high amount of mistakes the players make was something pointed out by former boss Stendel after his final game in charge, a 5-1 thumping at the hands of Preston North End, he told the Lancashire Evening Post: “You can see today over the 90 minutes that both in the small things and the big situations we played like a youth team - bad touches, fouls and mistakes.”

The team does have great spirit

This young Tykes squad has shown under Adam Murray that they have the fighting characteristics necessary to claw back to safety from relegation this season.

Not many teams would go to the Hawthorns this season with confidence seemingly shattered and take an early 2-0 lead. Regardless of the fact that errors led to them drawing the game 2-2, they still showed the fight and overall quality to get a result against the table-toppers.

Along with this result, Barnsley came back from behind to snatch draws against promotion-chasing sides in Swansea and Bristol of late. If Struber can tap into this quality of the squad and combine it with overall performances, there is nothing stopping them from consolidating in this division beyond this season.
