Aston Villa last night confirmed Dean Smith as their new manager, with the lifelong fan joining after his good work with Brentford over the years.

However, that wasn't the only bit of news coming out of Villa Park, with Jesus Garcia Pitarch appointed as Sporting Director, whilst John Terry is Assistant Coach to Smith.

The latter has gone down well with the majority of fans and it's easy to see why.

Terry was a key player for Villa last season, impressing with his performances in the team and was a major influence off the pitch with his professionalism.

Given that connection with the club and the fact he was a fantastic player, you would think having his experience and knowledge around the Championship side would be beneficial.

However, here we outline TWO reasons why Villa were wrong to insist on the 37-year-old joining Smith's backroom staff...

Smith has deservedly developed a reputation as a good manager but it isn't all down to him. He has worked with some fantastic people that help him, including Richard O'Kelly, so it's good to see he has followed him to Villa.

However, he doesn't know what Terry is like at all. Will they get on? Do they share a similar football philosophy?

It seems as though the board want a big name on the backroom team instead of those who will help Smith do the job he wants.

Smith has to work with Terry every day and he should've been the only person behind appointing his backroom team.

Terry has made it clear that he wants to be a manager and that's completely understandable.

However, he also wanted this job and was a leading candidate on a number of occasions. There has to be a concern about how he will handle the role of an assistant which won't be giving him the responsibility he clearly wants.

As well as that, there could be doubts about how the two work together moving forward, as Smith will know deep down that Terry wants his job.
