Aston Villa have started to find their feet under Dean Smith in the Championship as they mount their challenge for promotion this season.

One area that they have struggled in this season has been the goalkeeping position with summer signing Orjan Nyland coming under intense pressure in recent weeks.

Villa's promotion rivals, Leeds United have been making movements to signing a new goalkeeper after injury looks to have ruled Jamal Blackman out for the foreseeable future.

Marcelo Bielsa seems to be plotting a replacement for Blackman in January with Tom Heaton reportedly top of his January wish list when the transfer window reopens.

The Burnley shot-stopper has fallen out of favour under Sean Dyche and is currently third choice goalkeeper at Turf Moor behind Nick Pope and Joe Hart.

At the age of 32, Heaton certainly still has something to offer, and many Championship clubs will be targeting a deal for the goalkeeper in January.

Aston Villa should certainly be one of the clubs that are chasing Heaton, with Orjan Nyland struggling to adapt to life in the Championship since he arrived at the club in the summer.

But would Heaton be an ideal signing for Dean Smith's side?

We look at 2 reasons why Villa should jump ahead of Leeds in the race to sign Heaton.

Find out those reasons here....

Heaton has struggled for game time since returning from injury this season.

The former England shot-stopper has fallen down the pecking order at Burnley, with Nick Pope and Joe Hart seemingly ahead of Heaton in Sean Dyche's squad.

Heaton has the ability to be playing at a higher level than the Championship, but a club of Aston Villa's calibre could possibly persuade him to move to the club.

One position that Aston Villa have struggled in this season has been the goalkeeping position.

Summer signing, Orjan Nyland, has struggled to adapt to life in the Championship and many fans have already been calling for him to be replaced.

If Heaton was to arrive, then he would certainly challenge Nyland for a starting spot in Dean Smith's side.
