Nottingham Forest are said to be interested in signing Ayr forward Lawrence Shankland in the summer according to the Scottish Sun.

The striker has been in red-hot form this season and has 30 goals to his name so far this season, so it's clear to see why he is a man in demand.

Shankland's contract is due to expire in the summer, and his future with the Scottish outfit remains in doubt, especially given that a number of clubs are reportedly chasing him.

It is thought that both Hull City and Sunderland have also expressed an interest in signing him, with Swansea also being well publicised admirers of Shankland according to previous reports from the Daily Mail.

So speculation linking him with a move to the Championship doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon, and it's unlikely that this is the last we have heard of Nottingham Forest's interest.

We look at the reasons why the Reds would be making a huge mistake in signing Shankland.

See what those reasons are, below....

He's unproven in the English game

Shankland has been impressive over in Scotland, but there is always a risk of signing an in-form player to bring to the Championship.

He isn't proven in English football, and we have already seen a number of promising players come over to the Championship and struggle to build on their raving reviews they previously had.

Forest have better options available to them

Martin O'Neill isn't short of options up-front and Shankland wouldn't be an upgrade on any of the strikers that the Forest boss already has available to him.

The likes of Lewis Grabban and Leo Bonatini are definitely better options to have, and Shankland wouldn't be getting the game time he needs to develop in English football.
