With the dust having settled from what was an incredibly disappointing end to the 2018/19 campaign for Sunderland, manager Jack Ross will be aiming to use the upcoming transfer market to bolster his squad ahead of another season in League One.

Whilst the Scotsman will undoubtedly benefit from bringing in a number of players in several different positions, it is not at all surprising that he has already been linked with a move for one of the most deadly finishers in the lower divisions.

According to the Plymouth Herald, the Black Cats are reportedly close to agreeing a £500,000 fee for Plymouth Argyle forward Freddie Ladapo with Portsmouth also thought to be in the running for his signature.

If this is indeed true, it is imperative that Ross consider both the positives and the negatives that the 26-year-old could have on the club's fortunes over the coming years before committing to deal.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons based on Ladapo's career to date.

Check them out below...

He was sensational in League One last season

Although Ladapo was unable to stop Plymouth from being relegated to League Two last season, his incredible scoring record in the third tier suggests that he deserves to stay at this particular level next year.

In 45 games for the Pilgrims, he managed to fire in 18 goals whilst also providing three assists for his team-mates.

If he can replicate, or even exceed this total in a Sunderland shirt, the Wearside-based outfit should find themselves in a superb position to secure promotion to the Championship in 2020.

He could offer Sunderland something different in attack

When you consider that Sunderland's top-scorer during the 2018/19 campaign, Josh Maja left the club in January to join Ligue 1 side Bordeaux, it is obvious that they need to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

By bringing in Ladapo, the Black Cats will be adding a real powerhouse of a striker who likes to bully defenders into making mistakes, a trait which has been missing at the Stadium of Light in recent years.

He may not be able to cope with the pressure of a promotion race

Having been just 64 minutes away from booking their place in the Championship last month before being pegged back by Charlton Athletic in the play-off final, Sunderland will undoubtedly be one of the favourites to be promoted next season.

Yet with expectations to deliver set to be at an all-time high, Ladapo will simply have to learn how to deal with the pressure as if he can't, Ross will not have any hesitations to bench him for either Charlie Wyke or Will Grigg.

He could turn out to be a poor long-term investment

Even though £500,000 is a more than reasonable fee to pay for a striker at League One level, if Sunderland are looking towards gaining a long-term investment for their money, they may not get it with Ladapo.

Although he is an extremely potent player in the third tier, there is no guarantees that he will be able to make the step up required to thrive in the Championship if the Black Cats do indeed go up next May.

Therefore, upon their return to that particular division, they may end up having to loan out or even sell Ladapo if he cannot cut it.
