Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly eyeing a transfer swoop for Doncaster Rovers midfielder Madger Gomes according to Football Insider.

The report claims that the Owls have sent scouts to watch Gomes regularly in action for the play-off chasing League One side.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently sat 12th in the Championship table, and will be hoping they can show an improvement in results after a dismal run of form in recent weeks.

Garry Monk's side have won just once in their last eight games in the league, which has seen them slip down the second-tier standings at an alarming rate for the club's supporters.

Gomes has made 28 appearances for Doncaster Rovers this season, and has two assists to his name for Darren Moore's side this term.

Donny are currently sat tenth in the League One table, and will still be confident of forcing themselves into the play-off places before the season reaches a conclusion.

We look at TWO pros and TWO cons to Sheffield Wednesday targeting a move for the Doncaster Rovers midfielder ahead of the summer.

Pro: He's a player with a point to prove.

Gomes spent his youth career with Liverpool, before making the move to Leeds United at Elland Road.

But the central midfielder struggled for game time with the Yorkshire giants, and had numerous loan spells away from Leeds before leaving the club permanently in the summer of 2019.

This means that he has a point to prove to Leeds, and he'll be keen to showcase his talent at the highest level possible, at the earliest of opportunities.

Sheffield Wednesday could be the ideal destination for Gomes to do just that in the future.

Con: The cost of any potential deal.

Gomes only signed for Doncaster Rovers in the summer of 2019, so you have to imagine that any potential deal is likely to cost a hefty fee for Sheffield Wednesday.

He's not exactly a proven talent in the Championship either, which brings an element of risk to this deal, even though Gomes is clearly a player with a bright future ahead of him.

With Sheffield Wednesday's well-documented off-the-field financial problems in the past, there are surely better options out there for Garry Monk's side.

Pro: He still has age on his side.

Gomes is only 23-years-old and he'll still feel as though he has his best years ahead of him.

He had previously been on the books at Leeds United, but for one reason or another, failed to make the grade at Elland Road which saw him move to Doncaster Rovers.

Sheffield Wednesday could be the ideal club for the midfielder to fulfil his exciting potential, but they'll need to act swiftly to strike a deal with Darren Moore's side ahead of the summer transfer window.

Con: Do the Owls need another midfielder?

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk already has a number of options available to him in Gomes' position, which raises the question as to whether they actually need another player in that position ahead of the summer.

It seems difficult to believe that Gomes would be an upgrade on the likes of Barry Bannan (pictured) and Kieran Lee, so it might come across as a somewhat wasted move for both parties.

The central midfielder needs to think about his next move carefully, as it could make or break his career.
