It has been confirmed that Steven Fletcher has joined Championship club Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer, the clubs official website reports.

Fletcher, who spent the second part of last season on loan at French giants Marseille, will be hoping that he can rekindle his form to fire his new club one step further than they managed last season.

The twenty-eight year-old has played for two of Scotland's youth teams and has represented the Tartan Army twenty-eight times at senior level, scoring a respectable four goals.

Fletcher's experience on the international stage could prove invaluable to the Owls for the upcoming campaign.

Fletcher is no doubt a very big name and is a clinical finisher with a proven history, however this move does come with some doubts. And in this article, Football League World's Jack Sharp looks at two pros and two cons of the Scottish international's move to Sheffield.

Pro - Proven goal-scoring record.

Whether you agree with the signing of Fletcher, or not it is hard to deny the pedigree of the 28-year-old striker. He has a track record of scoring in high profile leagues, scoring 43 goals between 2004-09 with Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, and the 6' 1" frontman scored 23 goals in 94 games for Sunderland.

He has also had a spell abroad, playing in Marseille, during his time at the club Fletcher made 12 appearances netting twice for the club.

The signing of the 28-year-old is a real statement of intent from Wednesday, and if Fletcher starts firing promotion could look nothing but a formality.

Pro - Free transfer

Fletcher

Fletcher signs for Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer after his contract expired at Sunderland, and as he isn't under the age of 24 Wednesday don't have to pay any compensation for him, therefore getting him without having to pay a penny.

For what Fletcher could bring to the squad if he rekindles form, this signing from Carlos Carvalhal could be looked back on in May as one of the signings of the season.

Wednesday endured an agonising end to their season last season, they need a man who can ensure guaranteed goals; Fletcher could well be that man and if he can get a partnership going with other frontmen Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri it could be raining goals at Hillsborough.

Con - Form

Fletcher

In the 2015/16 campaign, Fletcher only made the small number of twelve Premier League appearances, netting four goals. Combine this with Fletcher's spell in France and all cup competition Fletcher made a total of thirty-six total appearances last campaign, only scoring seven goals.

While this isn't a disastrous return, for a striker with the pedigree that the Scottish international has you would be expecting more goals to come from him.

New seasons bring new beginnings, and Fletcher will be hoping that under Carlvalhal he can make more appearances and ultimately find the net more consistently.

Con - Wages

Fletcher3

There is no doubt that a striker with the credentials of Fletcher will take up a decent sized proportion of the wage bill at Hillsborough.

The 28-year-old was believed to be on about £28k a week at Sunderland, Wednesday could definitely deal with this wage bill, however could leave them unable to really strengthen other areas of their side.

This could dampen some hopes around Hillsborough of perhaps signing new faces, and could ensure that the Owls don't quite have a team well-rounded enough to compete with the other top Championship clubs: Newcastle United, Aston Villa etc...
