Sheffield Wednesday have improved under Steve Bruce since he started managing at Hillsborough in February 2019.

A player who has featured under Bruce in two separate spells at different clubs is 22-year-old attacking midfielder Josh Onomah.

According to the Football Insider, Sheffield Wednesday have opened talks with Onomah's parent club Tottenham Hotpsur, regarding the possible permanent signing of the midfielder.

Despite the promising England U21 international reportedly wanting to join the Owls on a permanent deal, there will always be pros and cons of signing players.

Here are two benefits and two drawbacks of Sheffield Wednesday signing Josh Onomah on a permanent basis.

Pro: Onomah is already used to the club

Josh Onomah spent the whole of the 2018/19 season at Hillsborough, playing over a dozen games for Wednesday during the season despite injuries.

This means that Onomah already knows the players, the staff and the supporters at Sheffield Wednesday. This will inevitably help if he makes a permanent move to Hillsborough.

The young attacking midfielder already seems reasonably settled in Sheffield, so agreeing personal terms may be less tricky for the Owls than it may seem.

Being at a club permanently where he plays week in, week out is likely to benefit Onomah's career hugely. Sheffield Wednesday has the ability to be the making of the 22-year-old.

Pro: Steve Bruce knows him inside out

Onomah is no stranger to Steve Bruce. Bruce signed the midfielder on-loan at the start of the 2017/18 season when he was the manager of Aston Villa. The midfielder played over 30 times for Villa in the 2017/18 season, scoring a handful of goals in that time.

When Bruce started his role as the Sheffield Wednesday manager in February 2019, Onomah was already there after being signed on-loan by previous manager Jos Luhukay last August for the rest of the 2018/19 season.

Now that Bruce has overseen two of Onomah's loan spells, the Sheffield Wednesday manager will know him inside out. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why he wants to sign him, he might be able to see the potential Sheffield Wednesday fans haven't yet...

Con: The fans aren't too keen on him

Even though Steve Bruce seems to be a big fan of Josh Onomah, Sheffield Wednesday fans on social media have had very mixed reactions to the possibility of signing the midfielder.

Although the attacking midfielder has played for many of England youth teams and was seen as one of England's brightest prospects a couple of years ago, a number of average performances from the 22-year-old has brought mixed opinions on whether Wednesday should sign him permanently.

Con: Spurs will not want to let him go cheaply

Josh Onomah still has a couple of years left on his contract at Spurs, meaning that the Champions League finalists are in no rush to sell the 22-year-old.

His long contract also means that the value of the midfielder will be maximised. This contract, as well as his age and appearances for the England U21 team, means that Spurs could be reluctant to sell Onomah.

Any deal that is done for the young player with Tottenham Hotspur will almost certainly include either a sell-on or a buy-back clause, as Onomah still has potentially over a decade of football to play before he retires.

If last season's transfer deals are anything to go by, Sheffield Wednesday will not be able to spend a lot of money. However, if owner Dejphon Chansiri does decide to back Steve Bruce, who has promotion winning experience with Hull City, it could pay off for the Sheffield side.

They will be looking to follow in the successful footsteps of their footballing neighbours Sheffield United to get to the top flight.
