Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest have both expressed an interest in signing Wigan Athletic winger Gavin Massey, according to the Daily Mail.

The 26-year-old is out of contract in the summer with Wigan reportedly keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal amid interest from their Championship rivals.

It is understood that the player is happy to remain at the DW Stadium, particularly if Paul Cook's side can avoid relegation back to League One.

Wigan are currently 19th in the Championship table, three points above the drop zone, with eight matches left to play.

Just one place above the Latics and currently on a slide down the table are Steve McClaren's QPR, who are reportedly interested in Massey's services.

Below are two pros and two cons to the R's signing him.

He is a talented player

QPR are on a poor run at the moment and have only managed one win from their last nine Championship matches.

McClaren's side have lacked pace and creativity at times in attack this season and could certainly benefit from signing a player of Massey's quality.

The 26-year-old has looked impressive for Wigan in the Championship this season and has two goals in his last four matches. He is clearly a talented player, who has a considerable amount of experience at a relatively young age.

He possess both pace and power and would pose a real threat from wide areas. He has the ability to play as a both winger and a central attacker and this versatility could really bolster McClaren's attacking options.

A smart bit of business

While there is no denying Massey's potential and that he has impressed in the Championship this season, it remains to be seen whether he has what it takes to make the step up to a club like QPR.

However, if the R's can take advantage of the player's contract expiring in the summer and get him on a free transfer, this would considerably reduce any element of risk attached to signing him.

If they can get the player on a free, it would represent a smart bit of business by the club.

Injury prone

Of course, every player will experience their fair share of injures over the course of their career but Massey seems to have been more unlucky than most.

A few setbacks have prevented the player from making the impact he would have liked at Wigan and he has already missed over three months of this season with a hamstring problem.

If the R's are to sign him, the player must stay clear of any more injuries in order to make an impact at Loftus Road.

Relatively unproven at Championship level

There is no denying that Massey is a talented player with a lot of potential and a considerable amount of experience, however, signing him would still represent somewhat of a risk for QPR.

While he has made good progress with Wigan, he is yet to really establish himself as one of the better attacking players in the Championship and is still relatively unproven at this level.

With the R's hoping to challenge for the play-offs next season, it remains to be seen whether Massey is good enough to make the step up needed.
