Having narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship last month after losing to Sunderland in the play-offs, Portsmouth will be hoping to go one step better next season.

Yet in order to have the best chance of securing promotion, it is imperative that boss Kenny Jackett gets his recruitment spot on this summer as a few quality additions could be enough to get them over the winning line in 2020.

With the transfer window well underway in England, it is not at all surprising that Pompey have already been linked with a move for a former Premier League star.

According to BBC journalist Andrew Moon, the League One outfit are reportedly eyeing up a move for Marc Pugh who was released by AFC Bournemouth earlier this week, bringing an end to his nine-year association with the club.

If this is indeed true, Portsmouth must consider both the positives and the negatives that signing the winger could have on their fortunes next year.

With this in mind, we have set out two pros and two cons based on Pugh's exploits during his career.

Check them out below...

Pros

Pugh has all the experience needed to propel Pompey to success

When you consider that Pugh has played over 400 league games during his career, it is fair to say that he has experienced just about everything there is to see in football and therefore won't be fazed about the prospect of dropping down to League One.

Having achieved two promotions during his time at Bournemouth, he knows exactly what is needed to launch a successful push for glory and therefore could be an invaluable player to have in the dressing room next season.

He has the potential to rip up the third tier

Make no mistake about it, securing the services of Pugh would automatically make Pompey favourites to win the League One title as he has the pedigree to cause havoc in the division.

With a proven track-record of delivering the goods in the Premier League as well as the Championship, the winger could prove to be somewhat of a cheat code for Jackett as he's arguably too good to be playing in the third tier.

Cons

His talents have waned in recent years

Although he demonstrated some signs of getting back to his best whilst on loan at Hull City last season, it is obvious that Pugh has lost some of the cutting edge which allowed him to thrive in the top-flight.

Now 32-years-old, the former Hereford United ace is getting ever closer to the twilight of his career and therefore may start to lose his pace and precision over the coming years which is something Pompey must take into account before swooping for him.

He may struggle to stay fit for an entire season

Whereas Pugh has been relatively lucky with injuries during his career, the fact that he had to have his spell at Hull cut short two months ago after being sidelined should act as a warning to Jackett.

If he can no longer provide assurances regarding his fitness, it may not be worth taking a risk on him as Portsmouth need players who can deliver on a consistent basis for them next season.
