Nottingham Forest have confirmed the signing of midfielder John Bostock on loan from Ligue 1 side Toulouse.

The 27-year-old will spend the duration of the 2019/20 season at the City Ground after just one season at Toulouse where he made a total of 20 appearances.

Bostock started his career with Crystal Palace before joining Tottenham aged 16, but he failed to make the grade in North London and was sent out on a series of loan spells before sealing a permanent move to Royal Antwerp in 2013.

The midfielder has not played in English football since this after a string of moves to the likes of Lens, Bursaspor and then Toulouse, but he has now become Forest's 12th signing of the summer.

So, is Bostock's arrival a strong conclusion to Forest's transfer business this summer?

Here are two pros and two cons to the Reds sealing the move...

Pro: He will be hungry to prove himself in English football

It has been six years since Bostock last plied his trade on these shores and he will be desperate to prove himself after he failed to settle at Tottenham or during any of his Football League loan stints.

The midfielder has now spent plenty of time abroad in an attempt to reignite his career, and he now has an excellent chance to break into Forest's starting line-up and show what he is capable of.

He was extremely well-regarded as a young player at Crystal Palace, so he definitely has the natural ability to succeed in English football and he could now have a chance of achieving this as a more mature character.

Pro: His quality means he could be an extra dimension to Forest's midfield

Bostock provides versatility in midfield as he could easily slot in at defensive midfield or in a more advanced role. The fact he has not played in English football for so long also means he adds an element of unpredictability to the side.

His expansive passing range and box-to-box approach means he would add a different option to the likes of Ben Watson and Claudio Yacob in the Reds' midfield.

Bostock's strong set-piece record also indicates he has a wide range of qualities that could see him favoured in Forest's midfield against Leeds on the weekend.

Con: Forest already have a vast array of central midfielders

It is hard to see how manager Sabri Lamouchi will now satisfy all the midfielders in his squad following Bostock's arrival at the City Ground.

The Reds have already signed defensive midfielders Samba Sow and Alfa Semedo this summer, while they also have the Ryan Yates in addition to Watson and Yacob.

Although Bostock will certainly provide a different option, many Forest fans will have reservations over whether his arrival was really necessary given the players already at the club.

Con: It's unclear whether he has the consistency to succeed in the Championship

Bostock has received plaudits for his development while playing in France, but he has never been able to settle at any of his clubs since making the switch to Antwerp in 2013.

He has shown glimpses of his brilliance throughout his career, but has never really been able to maintain this over a sustained period. It would be wrong to assume what happened at his previous clubs, but the fact he has moved around so much could indicate his inability to fully settle at a club.

However, his switch to Forest may finally be Bostock's chance to establish himself at a club. He is still relatively young at 27, so this move could give him the confidence he needs to assert his footballing ability.
