Spanish centre back Chema Rodriguez has joined Nottingham Forest from La Liga side Levante for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract.

The 27-year-old joins Sabri Lamouchi as the East Midlands side looks to achieve (at least) a top-half finish in the Championship in the 2019/20 season.

Some of the players that have come in at Forest this summer include Benfica players Yuri Ribeiro and Alfa Semedo, as well as the free transfer of Albert Adomah who was previously at Aston Villa.

Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, who had a nightmare on his debut, and Wolves striker Rafa Mir have also come from England's top flight on season-long loan deals.

The side have also retained the majority of their key players with the exception of Ben Osborn, who joined newly-promoted Premier League side Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee earlier this summer.

Here are two pros and two cons to Nottingham Forest signing Levante defender Chema Rodriguez for an undisclosed fee.

Pro: He's played against the likes of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid

Whilst playing in La Liga for Levante, he has played against some of the best sides in Europe. Unlike some other European leagues, where there might only be one or two clubs competing in the Champions League, there are a range of world-class teams in the Spanish first division.

Sevilla is just one example of another team that's won a number of trophies in the past few years, including winning the Europa League under Unai Emery three times in a row between 2014 and 2016.

All this experience against these top teams will provide Chema with the confidence that he will be able to cope with what the Championship has to offer, despite the quality of the teams getting higher and higher every season.

Pro: They've negotiated a good length of contract

The fact that Nottingham Forest have managed to negotiate a three-year contract with Chema could be very financially beneficial in the future if he does outgrow Nottingham Forest.

If he performs very well in his first season at the City Ground and clubs take a strong interest in him, he will still have two more years left on his contract at the East Midlands club. This will maximise his valuation which can only be a good thing for Forest.

If they had only agreed a two-year contract with him, it would have given other clubs the opportunity to pounce and take him for a cut-price in the following summer. Having only one year left on a current deal puts the power in the player's hands, which isn't always a good thing for clubs who want to keep their key players.

Con: Will he adapt to different footballing styles in the Championship?

Chema has always played his football in Spain, which means that he hasn't been able to learn the different styles of play that different teams play in the Championship. It's true when people say the Championship is like no other league.

Players who come from abroad to the English leagues can struggle sometimes to adapt to the way that certain teams play, just like English players who have gone to play in different countries. Moves like these do not always work out.

It's so important that Nottingham Forest have a solid defence if they are to aim for a chance at getting promotion to the Premier League. They definitely have the attack to achieve this, will their defence stay watertight?

Con: He hasn't always been in the starting lineup in the past couple of years

With the Championship season being 46 games long, Chema has only played 45 games in the past two seasons combined which may concern Nottingham Forest fans.

He's likely to be a starter for Nottingham Forest as they look to tighten their defence for the rest of the season, whether he can stay injury-free for manager Sabri Lamouchi remains to be seen.

The manager may have a selection headache if Chema does pick up injuries through the campaign, after not playing that much football in the past couple of seasons.
