Nottingham Forest’s deadline day capture of Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack must go down as one of the best pieces of business the club has pulled off in recent memory.

The Reds agreed to take the unsettled Villa man on loan for the rest of the season yesterday evening, ending McCormack’s six-month hell at Villa Park following his £12 million switch during the summer.

A public spat with Steve Bruce has seen the Scottish talisman fall way down the pecking order with the Villains, and a move to the City Ground should at least allow him the chance to get back playing regular first-team football.

Following the sensational deadline day swoop by Nottingham Forest, Football League World writer Lee Clarke took a look at two pros and two cons to the Reds signing forward Ross McCormack.

Pro – Proven Championship striker

Although McCormack only has three goals to his name this season, there is little to doubt his ability to stick the ball into the back of the net at Championship level.

During his first season at Fulham he found the net on 19 occasions despite the club languishing near the bottom for the majority of the campaign, whilst last season he managed 23 goals in all competitions.

But for his spell at Villa, McCormack has scored goals wherever he has been and Forest fans must be relishing such a feared marksman pulling on the famous red shirt.

Pro – Fearsome potential partnership with Britt Assombalonga

The concept of Ross McCormack and Britt Assombalonga playing together for Nottingham Forest looks like a joy to behold on paper.

Both strikers possess different qualities and it looks a frightening prospect for the rest of the Championship to have to contend with.

McCormack was a wanted man during the January transfer window and Gary Brazil has pulled off a real coup by taking the player to Forest for the rest of the season.

Con – Attitude

With Forest by no means McCormack’s first choice for a January move, there has to be a small element of doubt to actually want to be at the City Ground for the rest of the season.

If McCormack is prepared to roll up his sleeves and strive for the form he showed at Fulham then Forest will have a real player on their hands.

If the 30-year-old has already downed tools however and has arrived at Forest simply to go through the motions, then the Reds supporters could be left feeling mightily disappointed.

Con – Confidence crisis

One question that must be on the mind of every Forest fan before McCormack kicks a ball, is just how badly as his confidence been dented after such a miserable spell at Aston Villa?

Being a proven striker at this level you would think that McCormack would see the move to Forest as a fresh start and a chance to show Villa exactly what they are missing, although there is simply no guarantee of that.
