Sky Bet Championship outfit Nottingham Forest completed their first summer signing yesterday when Greek striker Apostolos Vellios penned a four-year contract with the club.

It signalled the end of a traumatic year for the Reds who had been unable to pay transfer fees last season amid a transfer embargo placed on them by the Football League.

The Greek international is unlikely to be the last signing for the Reds during the current transfer window, with many supporters hopeful that it will be the beginning of a glut of player arriving at the City Ground.

Forest finished in a lowly 16th position last season and new head coach Philippe Montanier will hope that his new £1 million recruit can help life the Reds into the higher echelons of the league next season.

As with all foreign imports into the Championship there is an element of risk and Football League World writer Lee Clarke takes a look at two pros and two cons to Vellios’ arrival on Trentside.

Pro – Signing for the future

The target man is just 24-years-old and he fits in with the club’s ethos of giving younger players a chance to shine in the first-team.

Vellios is likely to be a regular starter in the team and he should be given a run of games to settle back into the English game.

Pre-season will be crucial for the Greek striker as he looks to get acclimatised in the UK and he will need to be as prepared as possible for the gruelling league that is the Championship.

Given his tender years and the relatively low fee that the Reds have paid, I firmly believe the signing was a risk worth taking.

Pro – A man on a rich vein of form

The striker arrives at Nottingham Forest following an impressive season at Iraklis Thessaloniki, where he netted 11 goals last season.

The 6ft 4 talisman is high on confidence and the fact that he proved last season that he can score goals on a consistent basis is a massive plus for the Forest faithful.

His form last season saw him rewarded with his first cap for Greece and he clearly relished the campaign playing with his hometown club.

Forest will hope that he can pick up where he left off and fire a sufficient amount of goals for the club next season.

Con – Arrival from an inferior league

The Championship is one of the toughest leagues in Europe and each and every game requires a huge amount of dedication and focus.

Some players thrive on playing in the second tier of English football whilst others simply cannot cut the mustard with the demands of playing 46 games in a single campaign.

Vellios knows all about English football following a three-and-a-half year spell with Everton, but the jury will naturally remain out on his Championship credentials until a ball has been kicked next season.

The Greek league boasts a couple of half decent sides but the majority of it is made up with much smaller clubs and the prospect of taking on Newcastle United and Aston Villa, will be a whole different ball game for Vellios.

Con – Previous failed spell in English football

Many football fans can be overly cynical and a quick glance towards Apostolos Vellios’ career stats will indicate a pretty ordinary run of form in front of goal, particularly if you disregard last season’s total.

His three-and-a-half year spell at Everton from 2011 to 2015 was inconsistent and 22 appearances for the Toffees saw a return of just three goals.

Vellios was only 18 when he signed for the Premier League club and the Reds supporters will hope that he has learnt a lot since his younger days.

A few goals early into his Nottingham Forest career will go a long way towards putting the club’s supporters at ease, over his ability to score regular goals in the Championship.

Nottingham Forest supporters, are you happy with your new signing? Will he be a hit in the Championship?
