Newcastle have hit a bit of a tough spell since hitting the new year, but are hoping to make the right additions to get back on the promotion trail.

The club have been linked with a vast number of players as the January window has begun, with parts of the fanbase unhappy with their form and sitting second in the table, having lost seven games already this season.

One of the players they've been linked with a bid for is Tom Cairney of Fulham, who has been one of the club's outstanding players since joining the club from Blackburn Rovers in 2015.

He's made 63 appearances for the club in that time, scoring 13 goals and getting better and better with each year.

It was only a matter of time before he was picked up by a better club.

Here are TWO pros and TWO cons to Newcastle bringing in Tom Cairney.....

Pro: He's a very good player

Tom Cairney has continuously shone whilst playing at Fulham, and in previous seasons has been possibly overshadowed by super star Ross McCormack.

But McCormack's move to Aston Villa has seen Cairney step firmly into the limelight and perform as the club's top player, scoring five goals and making three assists from midfield this season.

Cairney would certainly be a superb addition to the clubs ranks, their would be no doubt that any club would take Cairney and see him go straight into their starting line up.

Con: No place for him in the squad

It's really hard to see a place for Cairney in the starting eleven of Newcastle United, has he generally plays in the number 10 role for Fulham, although he can play out wide.

Newcastle generally play in a 4-4-2 formation, which may see them have to change the way they play to incorporate Cairney's fine ability from behind the striker.

There's no doubt that Newcastle would benefit from bringing in Cairney but there's a struggle to see them being able to put him in their side.

Pro: Creative influence

Ever since Jonjo Shelvey's ban, Newcastle have struggled to break down any team that plays particularly defensively, which many do as their one of the best teams in the division.

There is no doubt that Cairney is an extremely creative and talented player, with whom Newcastle would benefit extremely from having.

He's an inventive player who would offer Newcastle the creation they're missing with a 92% success with his pass rate and making 2.7 key passes per game.

Con: Expensive

Fulham reportedly want £10 million for their star man, which is understandable given how important he'd been during their push up the table this season.

Even for Newcastle, this is a fairly pricey outlay for just one player, and there's little doubting that they could win even more impressive talent for that price tag.

Despite the fact that Cairney is an extremely impressive player, there are better options for £10 million.
