If you're Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels right now, it's safe to say you probably want the ground to swallow you up after some pockets of Toon fans began to turn on the former Gent goalkeeper.

Some supporters branded his display against Aston Villa as poor, despite the Belgian making a key save in the second half.

The game finished 1-1 and whilst there was little the goalkeeper could do to prevent Tshibola's late header, there were areas of his performance that didn't feel Newcastle United fans with confidence.

At 24-years-of-age, the young shot-stopper still has a lot of learning to do, despite him coming across older than his years.

Yes, Newcastle have another youngster in Karl Darlow waiting in the wings but Benitez is a man of principal and it seems like Sels is here to stay.

So with so many opinions circulating around the former Gent man's performances, we thought we'd take you through the TWO pros and TWO cons to Newcastle dropping Matz Sels...

CON: Playing games will only make him better

It's easy to drop a goalkeeper after a move to a new league and country- ask David De Gea.

There were thousands calling for his head week-in, week-out when he first arrived in England but look at his quality now.

Sels is a man that has only been playing here for a couple of months and who has actually only recently moved out of a hotel.

There are lots of things to consider here with the fact the Championship is one of the most aggressive leagues in the world being one of them.

But people need to get off his back a little. He will improve in time and he'll improve as he gets more games under his belt.

CON: Plenty of teams wanted to sign him this summer

matz-selss

There was plenty of Premier League interest in Matz Sels earlier this summer and it might have been easy for the former Gent man to choose the top tier of English football over the second.

But he was committed to the Newcastle cause from day one and that says a lot, however man fans Newcastle United have etc.

At the end of the day, he signed for a second division English club over someone playing in a higher league and for that, he deserves plenty of credit.

PRO: Time on the bench could improve his performance

Matz Selsddddd

When you're a goalkeeper and an undisputed number one at a club, there is sometimes a tendency to coast a little bit- ask Joe Hart.

Benitez has openly said on a couple of occasions that Sels is his go-to keeper this season, but despite this being common knowledge, the 24-year-old can't slow down his development.

He's coming into the peak years of his career and needs to train as well as he did when he broke through into the Lierse academy all those years ago.

If not, some time spent on the bench might not be such a bad thing after all.

PRO: He needs to be more aggressive in the penalty area

One of the main criticisms faced by the young keeper this season is that he hasn't been aggressive enough in the penalty area on a few occasions this season.

This is pretty easy to work on and for Sels, needs to become a bigger part of his game.

Having that number one who is dominant, vocal and commands respect in the 18-yard-box is vital and if that's something Sels needs to work on, then perhaps a spell on the sidelines isn't such a bad suggestion after all.
