Nottingham Forest's teenage sensation Arvin Appiah signed a new long term deal with the club this week and now looks set to become part of Martin O'Neill's plans for the club.

He was kept out of the side under former manager Aitor Karanka, but now the Irishman is in charge he looks ready to become a bigger part of the Forest side.

He's represented England up to Under 18 level, where he's bagged three goals in seven outings.

He hit three for the Under 17 side too, those coming across ten appearances. Now the 18-year-old is looking to break into the Forest first team and begin to live up to his potential.

He's made two senior appearances this season, scoring in the 3-2 defeat against Burton in the EFL Cup and coming off the bench on New Year's Day in the win against Leeds. He's now pushing for a start in the side, but would it be a wise idea?

FLW looks at the pros and cons of Arvin Appiah being thrown into the first team against Wigan this weekend.

PRO: Unknown quantity

Appiah is an exciting talent, but one that would be relatively unknown to Wigan. There's not a lot of previous match data and any scouting of matches wouldn't have seen him in action.

It's that sort of surprise that can see a naïve full back roasted and shocked. With recent revelations about match preparation, Appiah is just the sort of player it's hard to prepare for.

CON: Forest have to win

He might have only just gone into the job, but O'Neill needs to start picking up wins and quickly. They're hunting a top six spot, make no mistake about that. Games against Wigan and the like are must win matches,

Is that high pressure environment right for the youngster? Possibly not.

PRO: Great for development

Players have to develop somewhere. They have to be given these chances to thrive and show what they can do. Appiah will learn a lot more in 45 minutes of action against Wigan than three hours of Under 23 football.

If he's going to become the player they think he is, he'll need first team exposure. There's no time like the present.

CON: Better players available

Lolley, Cash, Dias, Carvalho... the list of attacking players hunting a first team spot goes on and on. They've all got more senior games than Appiah and in a fixture Forest really need to win, there's surely better available.

That's not to say he won't get a chance, but if they put two or three wins together drop him in, taking the element of pressure out of the equation.

Let the senior pros worry about the big matches and let Appiah do his stuff when there's a little less riding on the result.
