Former Bolton and Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan is interested in the vacant managerial position at Lincoln City, Nottinghamshire Live have reported.

Nolan has been out of work since he was sacked by Notts County at the end of last season, and is apparently keen to get back into management.

Lincoln meanwhile are searching for a new manager following the departure of Danny Cowley, after it was confirmed on Monday that the 40-year-old had left the club to take over as manager of Championship side Huddersfield Town.

So would Nolan be a good fit for Lincoln?

Here, we look at two pros and two cons to this potential appointment.

Pro: His record is fairly respectable

While he may have been sacked by Notts County after a run of six games without a win at the start of last season, Nolan's overall record isn't actually too bad.

In his two managerial jobs so far - Leyton Orient and Notts County - the former midfielder has a win percentage rate of over 40% - which would keep Lincoln competitive in League One were he to replicate that at Sincil Bank.

Indeed, having guided Notts to the League Two play-offs during his one full season in charge of the club, he may even have some of the insight required to help the Imps build on what has been an impressive start to life in the third tier this season.

Pro: He has the desire to do the job

With Nolan seemingly the one who is interested in Lincoln, rather than the other way round, it does seem to suggest that the 37-year-old would be committed to the cause here.

In the much the same way that the Cowley's desire to manage as high up the divisions as possible has taken them to Huddersfield, it seems that Nolan is showing the same ambition to step up from his past experience at League Two level with both Leyton Orient and Notts County.

If Nolan can convert that ambition to success in the same way that the Cowley's did in taking Lincoln from the National League to League One, this may not be the worst appointment they could make.

Con: This may not be the most popular appointment

Already it seems as though the suggestion of Nolan taking over has manager has been met with scepticism from those of a Lincoln persuasion.

Judging by the online reaction to news of Nolan's interest in the role, the end to his tenure at rivals Notts County, does understandably seem to have put a number of the club fans off the idea of seeing the former midfielder at Sincil Bank.

It may be smart therefore to avoid this particular appointment.

If the fans are already on a manager's back before he has even started, it can be difficult to win them over, particularly if early results on the pitch are not positive, and that is something that can lead to a challenging atmosphere for the squad to play in, something which won't help anyone at the club.

Con: There could be better options out there

Nolan isn't the only person to have been linked with the Sincil Bank dugout recently.

According to reports from the time of Cowley's departure, current Newport County boss Michael Flynn is the Imps first choice to take over at the club, and that may make things difficult for Nolan.

Not only is Flynn well set to get started having already been heavily involved at Newport for some time, but the wonders he has worked in dragging the club up through League Two to the point where they are now well in contention for promotion do seem to make him a very good option for Lincoln.

With the chance to step up to League One something that could well appeal to Flynn, this could make Nolan's apparent interest in the job somewhat irrelevant.
