Following a train wreck of a season, it is clear that Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom has a huge summer ahead of him as he looks to turn the club’s fortunes round and establish a clear and consistent promotion challenge.

With just a single win to his name since his appointment, some may begin to question the appointment of the former Barnsley boss, but it is clear that the 40-year-old inherited a poisoned chalice and needs time to turn things around.

Many will join the club and many will leave when the transfer window opens for business, but should ‘Hecky’ really consider a swoop for winger Max Gradel, a former Whites’ winger who was a favourite under Simon Grayson?

Here we take a look at the pros and cons of a potential deal…

Gradel may play towards the bottom of Ligue 1 with Toulouse on loan from Bournemouth, but he has scored six times in only nineteen league starts and added a further two in the French League Cup.

A solid return for a winger competing in one of European football’s perceived ‘top five’ leagues, the 30-year-old clearly has what it takes to excel in the Championship once again and could add real quality to the squad at Elland Road.

Gradel will surely be keen to link up with the west Yorkshire outfit again following a successful spell at the club in the past and fans will be keen to see him return.

Gradel was a popular figure at the club where he spent a brief spell between 2010 and 2011, scoring an impressive twenty-two times in just over sixty appearances and fans will be keen to see him return given his quality.

The fans are still behind their boss despite a lacklustre start to his reign, but as previously mentioned there will be doubts creeping in to the minds of some.

By capturing a player fans hold close to their hearts would certainly get them onside and having a man who knows the club and what it takes to play for Leeds United within the squad could inspire others to improve.

Does Hecky really want to bring back a player who made a name for himself under another manager?

This summer is the first opportunity the young boss will be given to stamp his own mark on the squad and make the changes that he wants to make and signing a player who left seven years ago has the potential to undermine himself.

Gradel is a good player and would be a good addition to the squad, but there are other players out there with no affiliation to former boss’ and past incidents and he may opt to follow this path and bringing in fresh blood.

There is no way Bournemouth will let the player leave for a pittance given he has two years remaining on his current deal and clubs from across Europe and potentially the world will be keeping a close eye on proceedings when he returns to the south coast.

Gradel has impressed in Ligue 1, a division closely monitored by the world, so there is a strong possibility a big club from China will come in with a significant bid and huge financial package to tempt the player into a transfer.

If Hecky goes in for Gradel and is gazumped or even worse rejected, then it could be a disaster for his reputation.
