Britt Assombalonga is the latest striker to be linked with a move to Leeds United this January transfer window.

The Daily Mirror has reported that United are keen to add a striker to their squad before their next game against Millwall next week, and that Assombalonga is now a target for the Whites.

United have endured a somewhat mini transfer saga with the chase of Che Adams, with a decision likely to be made on the 23-year-old's future following Southampton's game with Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening.

Apart from one own goal in their favour, Marcelo Bielsa's side have not scored since their dramatic 5-4 win at Birmingham City on the 29th December, and their lack of goals is now a real cause for concern.

Assombalonga has been with Boro since 2017 and has now joined a seemingly ever growing list of those tipped to replace Eddie Nketiah at Leeds.

Here we take a look at two pros and two cons to Leeds moving for Assombalonga this window...

Pro - A proven Championship goalscorer

Leeds are in desperate need of an experienced Championship goalscorer and Assombalonga would certainly fit that bill.

The 27-year-old has scored 65 goals across 175 appearances for Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, and could hit the ground running at Leeds.

Over his 265 league appearances throughout his career Assombalonga has scored 109 goals, and given the amount of chances Leeds create, would be sure to add to that tally at Elland Road.

Assombalonga has six goals so far this term for Boro and would certainly add a different dynamic to United's attacking line, as well as chipping with some much-needed goals.

Con - He is only just recovering from injury

The 27-year-old has missed the last eight games for Boro after picking up an ankle injury against Charlton Athletic at the start of December.

United should exercise caution if they are to move for Assombalonga give he is recovering from this injury and could be prone to suffering another if rushed back.

Leeds are in desperate need of a striker who can hit the ground running and if there were any fear of Assombalonga having to be rushed back to make it into the side could be a concern for United.

Pro - He will have a point to prove

Much was made of Assombalonga's arrival at the Riverside in 2017 but it could be fair to say that the striker has fallen slightly below expectations since joining Boro.

The 27-year-old has managed 37 goals in 114 appearances for the side and can only boast a season best of 15 so far for the club.

Should Assombalonga leave Boro this window he would be eager to prove he was worth his reported £15M price-tag that Boro paid for him in 2017.

Given the size of the transfer fee, some may have been forgiven for expecting more from the 27-year-old and should he join Leeds he will be eager to prove he can be a consistent goalscorer.

Con - He would command a heavy fee

As mentioned above, Assombalonga arrived at the Riverside for £15M in 2017, and with 18 months left on his contract it is feasible for Boro to command a large fee for the forward.

Given that United seem set on following their loan-to-buy options that have been a theme with most of their signings this season, it is hard to see Boro parting ways with the striker.

Leeds won't fork out a big transfer fee for the player as they are content on sticking rigorously with Financial Fair Play, and it is hard to envisage Boro allowing him to leave on loan to a fellow Championship club.
