Having taken over the reins at Hull City last Friday, Grant McCann will undoubtedly be looking to put his own stamp on his new side and therefore it is not at all surprising that he is being linked with a move for one of the most exciting talents in the lower leagues.

According to the Colchester Gazette, the 39-year-old is reportedly interested in signing Sammie Szmodics from Colchester United following the midfielder's stand-out performances in League Two last season.

If this is indeed true, it is imperative that McCann consider both the positives and the negatives that Szmodics could have on Hull's fortunes next season before committing to a switch.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons to Hull sealing a deal for the 23-year-old based on his career to date.

Check them out below...

Pros

He has the potential to become a quality operator

Having burst onto the scene as a teenager for Colchester in 2013, Szmodics has taken his game to new heights in recent years with his outstanding performances during the 2018/19 campaign culminating in him providing 24 direct goal contributions in all competitions.

Although there is no doubting that there is a considerable chasm in quality between the Championship and League Two, if the midfielder can make the step up in level required next season, he could thrive under the management of the forward-thinking McCann.

He could form a fruitful partnership with Jarrod Bowen

Unquestionably Hull's star performer last season, Jarrod Bowen set the Championship alight by firing in 22 goals as he helped his side secure a mid-table finish in the standings.

Providing that the forward stays at the KCOM Stadium this summer, Hull could find themselves in a situation where he and Szmodics end up forming a fruitful partnership which results in a great deal of success in the second-tier.

Cons

He could be out of his depth at Championship level

Having never played at Championship level before during his career, Szmodics may struggle to cope with the competitiveness that this particular division is famed for.

Whereas it is clear that the midfielder possesses a great deal of talent, it may be more beneficial for him to stay with Colchester for another year at least instead of committing to a leap of faith by moving to Hull.

His signing may not be too inspiring for the club's supporters

When you consider that Hull where a Premier League side just two years ago, their supporters will be wanting to see some real ambition from owner Assem Allam during the current transfer window which could allow them to dream of a return to the big time in 2020.

Therefore, by trying to secure a bargain by bringing in Szmodics, the Egyptian businessman will hardly be inspiring the Tigers faithful to have any resemblance of hope for promotion next season given the midfielder's lack of experience in the higher divisions.
