We are closing in on the end of the January transfer window and it has been a busy month for Huddersfield Town so far.

In his first transfer window since he took charge, Terriers boss Danny Cowley has been active–shaping his squad the way he wants it.

Four new players have arrived at the John Smith's Stadium this month, while six have left the club (if you include Aaron Mooy's permanent exit).

It appears Cowley is not done yet, however, as TEAMtalk has reported that Huddersfield are interested in signing out-of-favour Blackburn Rovers midfielder Richie Smallwood.

As the end of the window creeps close, the Terriers will no doubt be assessing the advantages and disadvantages of making a move for the 29-year-old.

With that in mind, here are two pros and two cons of Huddersfield targeting the midfielder...

Pro: It looks as though they could land him for cheap.

According to the TEAMtalk's report, Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray is ready to sanction Smallwood's exit.

It is understood that with his contract running out in the summer, Rovers are willing to let the Englishman leave for a very small fee.

That means Huddersfield would likely be able to get an excellent deal for the midfielder.

Pro: They would be adding an experienced campaigner.

The central midfielder has more than 200 Championship appearances to his name, meaning he could bring some real experience to Cowley's squad.

Things may not have worked out for Smallwood at Blackburn this season but he could be just the sort of player Huddersfield need in their fight for survival.

Con: They face lots of competition.

Unsurprisingly, it appears that the Terriers are not the only ones that feel they may be able to get a good deal for Smallwood before the end of this week.

The report claims that Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic, Barnsley, Sunderland, and Bradford City are all interested.

That competition means Huddersfield may have to provide the 29-year-old with some guarantees or could end up missing out after a long chase.

With time running out this window, they may be better focusing their efforts elsewhere.

Con: It may obstruct the development of some of their younger players.

Smallwood's arrival may add some experience to the squad but it could also reduce the opportunities for some of the young midfielders coming through.

With Andy King already joining this month, you'd worry the signing of the 29-year-old may mean that the likes of Matty Daly, Lewis O'Brien, and Juninho Bacuna miss out on playtime.

The best thing for their development at this point is to be playing regularly and Smallwood's arrival could obstruct that.
