With the start of the new Championship campaign edging every closer, Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer will undoubtedly be wanting to bring in some fresh faces between now and August.

Yet whereas the Addicks may benefit from the arrival of some new additions, they could also reap the rewards from signing one of the players who helped them achieve promotion from League One on a permanent deal.

According to the South London Press, Jonny Williams is reportedly set to join up with Charlton for their pre-season training camp in Spain following his release from Crystal Palace and may be offered a deal based on his performances over the coming weeks.

If this is indeed true, it is paramount that Bowyer considers both the positives and the negatives that signing the midfielder could have on the Addicks' fortunes next season before committing to a switch.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons to Charlton offering Williams a contract based on his career to date.

Check them out below...

Pros

He showed some real signs of promise last season

Having joined Charlton from Palace in January, Williams demonstrated some real signs of promise during his 19 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Whereas he only managed to provide one assist in the third-tier, his fantastic performance as a substitute during the play-off final showed just what he is capable of producing when at his very best.

If he can replicate the form that he illustrated against Sunderland on a wider scale next season, Williams could prove to a fantastic addition to Bowyer's squad.

He knows the Championship inside out

With no fewer than 105 Championship appearances under his belt, Williams knows exactly what it takes to thrive at this particular level and therefore it may be worth Charlton taking a risk on him this summer.

Given that a host of the club's players have very little experience of English football's second-tier, the 25-year-old could use his wisdom to help them adapt to their new surroundings which in turn will give the Addicks a great chance of survival during the upcoming campaign.

Cons

He has a worrying history of injury issues

Despite bursting onto the scene as a teenager for Palace in 2011, Williams has unfortunately failed to reach the heights that were expected of him due to a plethora of injury problems.

Although he managed to avoid any major issues last season, history suggests that the midfielder is more than likely to break down once in the future.

Therefore, when you take this into consideration, it may be worth the Addicks steering clear of Williams as he will be no use to them if he cannot play.

There is no guarantee that he will be as successful during his second stint at the Valley

Whereas there is no doubting Williams' ability to provide a killer pass or a devilish delivery from the wide areas, it is not necessarily a foregone conclusion that the former Ipswich Town loanee will be a success if he returns to Charlton.

With his most recent Championship campaign resulting in him scoring just once in 12 appearances for Sunderland, the jury is out on whether he will be capable of producing the goods in this division for and Addicks side who can ill-afford to be carrying any passengers next season.
