Cardiff City are thought to be lining up a move for Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan in the January transfer window as Neil Harris wants to put his own stamp on the squad.

McGeehan has scored two goals in 12 league appearances this campaign, adding to the six goals in 36 league appearances he got last season as Barnsley achieved promotion from League One.

Having penned a new contract in the summer for another two years, the midfielder could come at a cost for the Bluebirds if they make a bid for him.

Here are two pros and two cons to Cardiff signing the 24-year-old...

Different options in midfield - Pro

The Bluebirds already have plenty of options in the central midfield area, with the likes of Marlon Pack, Leandro Bacuna, Lee Tomlin and Joe Ralls being four of the best in the league.

McGeehan would add to the midfield that had been assembled by Neil Warnock at The Cardiff City Stadium before his resignation last month, and the in-form star could be another option for Neil Harris to pick.

Suits Harris' style - Pro

McGeehan likes to get on the ball and pass it around, attempting to speed the tempo of the play up if things go a bit flat and a bit lacklustre in the middle of the park.

He likes to get forward to try and join the attacks, and he would work well if Harris brought him in and utilised him alongside a holding midfielder like what Marlon Pack is.

Could be expensive - Con

The Bluebirds could be forced to part with a substantial amount of cash if they was to land McGeehan in January, having signed his new two-year contract in the summer.

With another 18 months left to run on his deal, and the midfielder being a pivotal player in Barnsley's system, the Yorkshire club are unlikely to let him go cheaply and the Bluebirds would need to negotiate a reasonable figure if they was to bring him to The Cardiff City Stadium.

Selection headache for Harris - Con

While some managers like a selection headache, this particular one would be bound to annoy Harris.

With four quality midfielders in Pack, Bacuna, Ralls and Tomlin, McGeehan would just add to the problem of Harris attempting to fit two or three of them in his starting 11, with one potentially being left off of the bench every matchday, a problem that Harris won't want with all five of them capable of starting in his team.
