Cardiff City are now on the hunt for a new manager for the first time since 2016, and they are eyeing up the experienced Chris Hughton as the man who can steady the ship according to the Times.

The 60-year-old has been out of work since leaving Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of the 2018-2019 season, and he will be eager to get back into management even if it means stepping down a level to the Championship.

Here, we take a look at two pros and two cons as to why Cardiff should be taking a look at hiring the experienced manager...

Knows how to get promoted - pro

Chris Hughton has the right know-how and experience on getting promoted from the Championship into the Premier League, having won the title with Newcastle United in 2010 and being promoted automatically in 2017 with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 60-year-old brings that experience with him that somebody else might not and he would be able to give Cardiff the best chance of earning promotion back to the Premier League, which is what the Bluebirds crave.

Would bring a disciplined style to the club - pro

Just like what Warnock did well with the club, Hughton would be able to bring a disciplined and regimented approach to the club, both on the pitch and on the training field.

Hughton knows the best way to grind out results and he would set his side up with a disciplined approach away from home to try and get the points on the board that the club would need for promotion.

Cardiff need a new style of football - con

Having just had to endure Warnock's disciplined and defensive approach, the Bluebirds supporters would be more keen to see a manager with fresh ideas and a different gameplan come in to try and help the side.

Hughton's a good manager, however, Warnock's style wasn't well-liked by the Cardiff fans and they would be hoping for a new manager that wasn't like Warnock in terms of style.

Younger managers available - con

While Hughton would be the experience and knowledge of the league, there is no denying the fact that the former Tottenham Hotspur player is getting on age and the peak of his powers is almost over.

Cardiff could be better off searching for that younger manager, such as Lee Bowyer, who could build a long-term project at The Cardiff City Stadium instead of Hughton being hired as a short-term option.
