Brentford have made some shrewd signings this summer but saw their promotion chances take a huge blow yesterday as star striker Neal Maupay joined Brighton in a deal worth a reported £20 million.

After scoring 28 goals last season, Maupay had been linked with a move away from Griffin Park throughout the summer but you could have forgiven Bees’ fans for growing hopeful that he’d stay as the end of the transfer window grew closer.

Brentford’s attention now moves to finding a replacement and it appears their eyes have been drawn across London to Charlton Athletic forward Lyle Taylor.

According to Football Insider, Taylor is the Bees' top target and the club are considering a £3 million bid for the 29-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract.

Finding a replacement for Maupay will be tough and the Frenchman has left some big shoes to fill in West London.

Keeping that in mind, we have set out two pros and two cons to Brentford moving for Taylor before the transfer window closes.

Check them out below…

Pros

He was excellent for Charlton in League One last season

Taylor was an integral part of the Addicks’ successful promotion campaign in 2018/19 and provided much more than just goals.

The striker was Lee Bowyer’s side’s top-scorer, finding the net 25 times, and was also one of their most influential creative players, providing by far the most assists in the squad with 13.

He continued that good form by finding the net against Blackburn in Charlton's Championship opener on the weekend. Brentford would certainly be getting a player who is high on confidence.

He has a good goalscoring record

Last season was by no means a breakthrough season in terms of production for the 29-year-old.

Taylor has been involved with at least 20 goals per season for the last four consecutive seasons and scored at least 18 goals in three of those.

He has shown he can thrive under the pressure of being a side’s main goal threat.

Cons

He is unproven at this level

Taylor has got a great goalscoring record over the past few years but he has played the majority of his career in the lower leagues of English football and he remains an unknown at Championship level.

Saturday’s win against Blackburn was his Championship debut, so Taylor is far from a proven goalscorer at this level.

Brentford will surely be targeting the play-offs and subsequently promotion this year and it would be a risk to build that around a striker without much Championship experience.

It is not a long-term solution

Taylor is 29, so he is likely coming toward the end of his prime as a striker.

Maupay is 22-years-old and so bringing in a man seven years older than him as his replacement is hardly a long-term solution.

Taylor looks like more of a stop-gap signing that the Bees may be forced to make with the end of the transfer window so close.
