Ezri Konsa became Aston Villa’s latest summer addition on Thursday as he joined in a £12m deal from Championship club Brentford.

The 21-year-old spent a season under the management of Dean Smith at Brentford, and showed his huge potential at Griffin Park.

The Premier League move is another key step in Konsa’s career, just a year after his £2.5m move from Charlton in 2018.

The deal has positive impacts on Villa, who have made a number of positive signings this window, but what will it mean for Brentford, who had already signed a replacement in Swedish international Pontus Jansson?

Here, we look at two pros and two cons to the Bees selling a key defender to Villa.

Pro - Good money

£12m means that Brentford make a huge amount of profit on this deal, allowing them to reinvest elsewhere in the team.

In the last few years, the Bees have relied on selling key men to fund investments in new signings.

This strategy seems to be working, and with a couple more signings, Brentford can seriously challenge for the top six this coming season.

Con - Lost a key man at the back

With the sale though means Brentford have lost one of their key players, one of the most consistent performers for the Griffin Park club last season.

Brentford have replaced Konsa already with the signing of Pontus Jansson from Leeds, but the loss of the young star could be a big gap to plug.

He has over 100 EFL appearances to his name now, and is certainly ready for the Premier League, but Thomas Frank may have hoped he could’ve stayed at Brentford to help guide them to the top flight.

Pro - Will show future targets Brentford is a great shop window

Konsa, like many more before him, moved to Brentford before moving on to a bigger club in the English football pyramid.

This will encourage potential transfer targets to do the same in the future: join Brentford.

At Griffin Park, young players are given a chance to shine, and few have flopped.

This means that when a player is weighing up his options in the future, he will see how Brentford is a great place for career progression, and might choose this over another offer he may have.

Con - Is Jansson a downgrade?

Pontus Jansson is a weird one. Is he a downgrade?

The answer is evidently uncertain. At this current moment of time, Jansson is a leader and a great defender, but in the long run Konsa may be the better all rounded defender.

The Swede is a great signing regardless, and could be just what Brentford need, but letting go of Konsa so easily could be a bad move.
