Despite the transfer window closing for League One clubs earlier this month, Bolton Wanderers may be about to bolster their squad by securing the services of a free agent.

According to TEAMtalk, the Trotters are reportedly interested in signing Graham Dorrans, who is currently without a club after being released by Rangers.

The 32-year-old, who is also being tracked by Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town, is thought to be keen on a move to Bolton.

If this is indeed turns out to be true, it is imperative that Trotters manager Keith Hill weighs up the positives and the negatives that the midfielder could have on the club's fortunes this season before offering him a contract at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons to Bolton sealing a deal for Dorrans based on his recent exploits.

Check them out below...

Pros

He will bring some much-needed experience to their midfield

Whilst Bolton strengthened their options in the heart of midfield earlier this month by signing Liam Bridcutt, they could benefit from bringing in Dorrans as he could add some much-needed experience.

Having made over 350 senior appearances during his career, the former West Bromwich Albion man knows exactly what it takes to achieve success and thus could turn out to be a pivotal player for a Trotters side who are fighting for survival this season.

He could be a mentor to the club's younger players

When you consider that Dorrans has featured at the highest level in England for West Brom and Norwich, he could pass on the knowledge that he gained from his time at these two clubs to Bolton's younger players.

With a number of academy graduates gaining first-team experience during the opening weeks of the season as a result of the Trotters' off-the-field issues, they may end up benefitting from some guidance from the Scotland international.

Cons

He struggled during his recent spell with Rangers

After joining Rangers in 2017 following a two-year spell at Norwich, Dorrans ultimately failed to live to expectations at Ibrox.

Limited to just 23 appearances over the course of two seasons, the midfielder looked a shadow of the player who had thrived in the Premier League.

If Bolton do end up signing him and he is unable to deliver the goods, they may look back on the move with regret in the coming years.

There is no guarantee that he will be able to stay fit at Bolton

When you consider that Dorrans missed a huge chunk of the previous campaign due to a serious knee injury (via Transfermarkt), bringing him in would be a huge risk for Bolton.

With there being no guarantee that he will be able to remain fit over the course of the current season, the Trotters may find it more advantageous to wait until the January transfer window to bring in a midfielder who has doesn't have a troubled history with injuries.
