Blackburn Rovers have secured the services of  Manchester City defender Timi Sobowale on a two-week trial period, the Championship side's Under 23s manager Billy Barr has confirmed.

The 17-year-old has already been given his first taste of action in a Blackburn shirt, after playing the full 90 minutes of Rovers' Under 23's win over their Everton counterparts on Tuesday afternoon.

It is thought that the Lancashire club will assess the performances of Sobowale over the coming fortnight, before making a decision over the long-term future of the teenager.

So would extending Sobowale's stay at Blackburn be a good move for the club to make?

Here, we look at two pros and two cons to that potential deal.

Pro: He clearly has plenty of potential

When you look at the status of Manchester City right now, you don't get the feeling that they are the sort of club that will let just anyone join.

Given the amount of silverware they compete for on an annual basis these days, City are only going to want players in their squad who are capable of continuing that for years to come, meaning Sobowale must have shown a certain standard of football to earn himself a place on the club's books.

Indeed, when you consider he has also represented the Republic of Ireland on several occasions at Under-18s level, this is clearly a player who has impressed many within the game, meaning he could be a decent addition to the setup at Rovers.

Pro: It could help generate a partnership

It is worth noting that Sobowale is not the only player associated with Manchester City currently on Blackburn's books at the minute.

While Sobowale is looking to impress with Rovers' Under-23s side, 22-year-old centre back Tosin Adarbioyo is currently enjoying a run of starts in the club's senior side, having joined on a season-long loan from the Etihad in the summer transfer window.

As a result, it could be argued that if these two moves prove successful in terms of helping their younger players to develop, then City may well be comfortable allowing more of their youth prospects to work with Blackburn in the future, something which given their ability, could be just as useful for Rovers as it is for them.

Con: He is still some way for the first team

While Sobowale does seem to have plenty of potential, he is by no means a quick fix for the pressing problems facing the first-team.

With Blackburn winless in six, injury-ravaged in defence and just three points clear of the Championship relegation zone, there is clearly much for manager Tony Mowbray to rectify in the coming weeks.

At 17-years-old however, you feel Sobowale still has some way to go until he is capable of stepping up to the challenges of the Championship, both from a physical and football perspective, meaning this alone is unlikely to do much to help Rovers' current uncertain situation.

Con: It could impact the progression of some of those already at the club

While it appears Sobowale has been brought in to help cover some of the injury problems currently being faced in defence by the club's Under 23s, those are problems Rovers will hope are temporary issues to be solved, meaning the teenager may not be needed quite so much in the long term.

Indeed, with Under-23s graduates Tyler Magloire and Joe Grayson both handed their chance in the first-team since the start of last season, you imagine Blackburn will want places available for them in their academy side when they eventually start to make their respective returns from injury in a few months time.

It seems therefore, that could make holding down a place difficult for Sobowale, particularly with the other options Rovers have in those areas of the park, which could leave the 17-year-old with the same struggles for game time he has been facing at Manchester City this season.
