Having taken over the reins at Birmingham City from Garry Monk last month, Pep Clotet will unquestionably be wanting to put his own stamp on his squad before the 2019/20 Championship campaign kicks off in August.

Therefore, with the Blues needing to boost their attacking options following the departure of Jota, it comes as little shock that the Spaniard has been linked with a move for a new winger.

According to the Sun (as quoted by WalesOnline) Clotet is reportedly interested in signing Jefferson Montero from Swansea City.

If this is indeed true, it is imperative that the Blues boss considers both the positives and negatives that the 29-year-old could have on the club's fortunes next season before committing to a deal.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons to Birmingham sealing a move for Montero based on his career to date.

Check them out below...

Pros

He could form a fruitful relationship with forward Lukas Jutkiewicz

Despite Che Adams' departure, the fact that the club still have Lukas Jutkiewicz on their books means that all hope is not lost for next season.

Having directly contributed to 24 goals in the Championship during the previous campaign, the forward will be confident that he can continue this fine form over the next 10 months.

However, in order to have the best chance of thriving once again in the second-tier, Jutkiewicz will need to be the beneficiary of some devilish deliveries from the wide areas which is were Montero could come in handy.

By establishing a fruitful relationship with the 30-year-old, the Ecuador international could become a key asset for the Blues.

He may be able to lift the gloom that currently surrounds St Andrew's with his performances

When you consider that the vast majority of the club's supporters were not happy with the Blues' decision to sack Monk, it is fair to say that the atmosphere surrounding St Andrew's is certainly not great.

With star players leaving and Birmingham under considerable financial constraints following last season's points deduction, it is clear that the West Midlands-based outfit are in desperate need of a spark from somewhere.

If Montero can hit the ground running under Clotet by producing a string of impressive performances, the winger could finally give the Blues fans something to shout about and thus lift the doom and gloom that currently surrounds the club.

Cons

He struggled considerably in the Championship last season

After spending the first half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Ecuadorian side C.S. Emelec, Montero was shipped out to West Bromwich Albion in January by Swansea City where he struggled to make an impact in the Championship.

Although he scored on his debut for the Baggies, a drop-off in form resulted in him making just three more appearances for the club with then-boss James Shan preferring the likes of Matt Phillips and Jacob Murphy in the wide positions.

Given his struggles in recent struggles in the second-tier, signing Montero would a massive risk for Clotet to take as there is no guarantee that the winger will be able to produce on a consistent basis for the Blues next season.

He may not be good enough to fill the void left by Jota

Unquestionably a huge loss for Birmingham, Jota's move to arch-rivals Aston Villa in June has left a huge void that will need to be filled this summer if his former side are to go on to achieve success in the Championship.

However, whereas there is no doubting that Montero possesses a wide array of skills, he may not be the right man to replace the Spaniard as it is clear that his talents have waned somewhat in recent years.

Therefore, it may be more beneficial for Clotet to focus on bringing in a top-quality loanee from the Premier League or a player with a wealth of experience at second-tier level instead of wasting his time on a player who may not be good enough to replace Jota.
