Ahead of a major rebuild at Aston Villa, the fallen Midlands giants have been linked with a move for Norwich City midfielder Graham Dorrans.

Robert Di Matteo takes over a club in crisis and his reputation as a Champions League winner does little to change the fact the Italian must ring the changes at a side that so meekly succumbed to the drop last year.

Still, he will reportedly be handed a hefty transfer kitty by the club's new owners ahead of what promises to be a lavish summer of spending at Villa Park.

With Dorrans' future unclear with his current side, this summer could represent a natural end to his brief spell at Carrow Road.

Having worked with the Italian before, its easy to see why there's a link between the two. Especially considering the club are in desperate need of reinforcements to a squad that will surely be gutted over the course of the next few months.

But does it make sense on the pitch too? Here are 2 pros and 2 cons to this potential deal.

Pro 1: Di Matteo Reunion

Graham Dorrans of West Bromwich Albion and Victor Anichebe of West Bromwich Albion celebrate at the end of the game

Under Roberto Di Matteo the 29 year-old had his best season at West Brom when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2010.

He scored 18 goals in that season and under Di Matteo, Dorrans topped the league's assist chart with 19.

A chance to reunite with the manager who he had so much success with will only provide dividends for Dorrans and the Italian manager will feel comfortable working with the Glaswegian.

Pro 2: Championship Experience

The former Livingston midfielder has never really hit the heights in the Premier League that he has in the Championship.

Having worked with both Di Matteo and rumoured assistant manager Steve Clarke before, the two know that Dorrans is a consistent Championship player.

If Di Matteo was to pick any player to slot into the attacking midfield role at Villa it would be Dorrans.

Con 1: Career Has Stalled

Despite his talent and his Championship ability, Dorrans has failed to perform in the past few years.

He has only scored eight Premier League goals and has only provided ten assists despite making over 100 appearances in England's top flight.

Dorrans will have to seriously improve if he is to help Aston Villa back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Con 2: Lack of first-team football

Dorrans has made over 150 appearances over the last five years but he has not completed over 20 starts since the 2012/13 season and has only made over 30 appearances in the 2011/12 season over these last few years.

The former Partick Thistle player spends a lot of time used as a substitute and he will need match fitness to be able to compete in a tough Championship season.

Di Matteo will need to ensure that if he signs Dorrans that he can ensure to make sure his talent isn't wasted through a season on the bench or out with injury.
