Having sacked Garry Monk on Tuesday despite the 40-year-old's sterling efforts during the 2018/19 campaign, Birmingham City are now on the lookout for a replacement who they believe can take them into a new dawn.

Whereas a whole host of names have already been linked with the vacancy at St Andrew's, the Blues may already have the ideal man to take over the reins amongst their ranks already.

Appointed as caretaker manager following Monk's departure, Pep Clotet is currently in charge of first-team affairs at the club and will be hoping to make a positive impression over the coming weeks to Birmingham's hierarchy.

If the Blues do decide to give the Spaniard the job on a permanent basis, it could have a profound impact on the club next season.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons to keeping Clotet in charge based on his career to date.

Check them out below...

Pros

He will play a similar brand of football to Monk

Having worked alongside Monk at Swansea City, Leeds United and Birmingham, Clotet would have learnt a great deal from the Englishman and therefore it would not be at all surprising if he adopts similar tactics at St Andrew's during the upcoming campaign.

Considering the fact that the Blues were on course to launch a push for the play-offs last season before being hit with a points deduction in March, it could be argued that by sticking to the status quo over the next 11 months, the former Halmstad boss could end up being very successful.

He could put his trust in the club's academy players

Having helped to develop some of Spain's most exciting prospects during his time at Malaga B and Espanyol B, Clotet may turn to Birmingham's academy for inspiration if given the job.

Whereas it would be a risk to throw the Blues' players straight into the deep end in the Championship, by allowing them to initially express themselves in the cup competitions, the 42-year-old may stumble across an individual who has the ability to completely transform the club's fortunes.

Cons

He may not be ready for such a big project

When you consider that Birmingham are currently under considerable constraints after breaching Financial Fair Play rules earlier this year, whoever takes over at the club will have to work miracles with what will almost definitely be a minute budget.

For Clotet, this may end up being too big of a project to undertake as he clearly lacks experience in the hot-seat.

Therefore, instead of appointing him, the Blues should be targeting a manager who knows exactly what it takes to thrive in the second-tier.

He was relatively ineffective during his time at Oxford United

Following Leeds' decision to part ways with Monk in 2017, Clotet decided to leave the club in order to take charge of League One side Oxford United in what was his first managerial role in English football.

Although he experienced a bright start to his time at the Kassam Stadium, a poor run of results culminated in him being sacked by the Yellows in January 2018.

If he hasn't learnt his lesson from the mistakes that he made at Oxford, Clotet may struggle to keep Birmingham in the Championship next season which in turn could lead to even more turmoil at the club.
