Dean Smith has already had a very good January with Aston Villa but he will still be hoping for more as he looks to build a squad capable of finishing strongly and pushing for promotion.

The arrivals of Lovre Kalinic and Kortney Hause should help what has been a struggling defensive unit, whilst the news that top scorer Tammy Abraham looks set to stay is a massive boost.

Yet, the ex-Brentford manager will feel further additions are needed and Monday's Daily Star revealed how Villa have been linked with a move for Sheffield Wednesday's Adam Reach.

The 25-year-old has been an outstanding performer at Hillsborough this season and has attracted a lot of attention after some superb goals.

And, here we look at two potential pros and two cons if Smith did manage to seal what would be a big-money swoop for the talented left-footer...

He can cover various positions

One positive Reach brings is versatility.

In an ideal world he would have one position and stick to it but he has shown over the years he can play across the midfield and potentially even as a left-back.

With the games coming thick and fast, that can be a vital quality.

He suits Smith's style of play

Reach is a technically gifted player and is very comfortable on the ball - as his great collection of goals prove!

Therefore, he should have no problem settling into a Dean Smith side that look to keep possession and move the ball quickly.

He would command a big fee

Given his importance to the Yorkshire side, the Owls are not going to sell on the cheap.

Whilst Villa's new owners have backed the club significantly since taking over, the reality is that throwing money at the team will backfire if they don't win promotion.

That makes any potential deal for Reach a risk.

Do they need him?

Following on from that, you'd have to question as well whether Villa actually need Reach.

Obviously, he's a very good player but Villa are well-stocked in midfield and the wide areas.

There are other positions that Smith needs to prioritise.
