Sheffield Wednesday appear to have shelved plans to offer the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Atdhe Nuhiu and Kieran Lee new contracts at Hillsborough.

Garry Monk is facing an important summer at Hillsborough, with the Wednesday squad needing some fine-tuning to properly give it a fresh look after becoming the nearly-men of the Championship.

QUIZ: Can you name every Sheffield Wednesday front-of-shirt sponsor from the last 15 seasons?

A report in the Sheffield Star has noted how players like Morgan Fox and Steven Fletcher are a priority, with no move yet to tie Forestieri, Nuhiu or Lee down beyond the summer.

It’s a bold move, but parts of the decision make sense, which leads us to looking at the pros and cons.

Here, we break them down…

Pro: There’s no rush

Monk has been with Wednesday since the early months of the season and will have had a good look at what is available to him.

He will know who he wants to carry into the new season and who he wants to move on, with the decision, rightly, given time.

The forced EFL postponement due to the outbreak of coronavirus gives Wednesday more time than they once had, which means there’s no rush to be handing out contracts.

Con: Players becoming frustrated

The players in question are a professional bunch, but you run the risk of them throwing their toys out of the pram by making their future so unclear.

Ultimately, there are nine games of the season still to play and plenty of points left to be won.

Wednesday are at risk of not picking up many of those points if everyone isn’t pulling in the same direction.

Pro: Fresh faces needed

Wednesday have a stale look to them under Monk, with the manager still having a large part of the squad that were around under Carlos Carvalhal.

Fresh faces are needed, so offloading the likes of Forestieri, Nuhiu and Lee makes complete sense.

They’ve all made a great contribution to some memorable days at Hillsborough, but now might be the time to cut ties.

Con: Pressure on a big summer

If Wednesday clear the decks, it does thrust a lot of pressure onto Monk to get things right in the transfer window.

Whilst fresh faces are needed, there’s a risk. Is what Monk gets good enough?

Forestieri, Nuhiu and Lee are good enough for the Championship; they might not be at play-off level, but they would never have Wednesday in a relegation battle.

Monk would be under pressure to get players of the same level on board, which might not be as easy as it seems.
