Pundit and former footballer Danny Higginbotham suggested one Championship man could be the answer to Gareth Southgate's holding midfield conundrum.

It won't be a surprise to many Leeds United fans that the former Derby County defender has suggested that Kalvin Phillips could be the answer to Gareth Southgate's holding midfield dilemma.

Higginbotham, 40, said in his Sun analysis on Sunday that it isn't a problem Phillips hasn't played in the Premier League and that the midfielder is "a very good tackler, and his distribution both long and short is fantastic."

Most Leeds fans would be quick to agree with Higginbotham but some may argue it could be too soon for Phillips to make that step into the England fold.

Here we take a look at two pros and two cons of Phillips being called-up to Southgate's England squad...

Pro - He will add a different dynamic

Southgate has opted recently to switch between Declan Rice and Harry Winks in the holding midfield position, with the latter scoring on Sunday evening in the 4-0 win over Kosovo, albeit from an advanced position.

Whilst it is fair to say neither of the players have set this season alight it could be fair to suggest that Phillips would offer a more creative and direct dynamic to Gareth Southgate's side.

The United ace posses a killer instinct to break up opposition play and quickly turn defence into attack, and with England boasting arguably one of the most threatening offensive lines in Europe, Phillips could be the man to add the creativity in midfield to feed that attacking line.

Con - Could further interest from Premier League sides

This would obviously be a big negative for United and could lead to the midfielder getting even more recognition from a handful of Premier League sides.

The club rejected the advances of Aston Villa over the summer for the midfielder and the 23-year-old has since signed a new five-year-deal at Elland Road.

If he were to be thrust into the England side and play how he has done for the Whites this could lead to further interest from a handful of Premier League clubs, interest that United may find it hard to deter.

Pro - It could increase his value

The Aston Villa bid of the summer was rumoured to be in excess of £25M, and since signing a new contract Leeds' valuation will no doubt have increased.

Although United would not want to sell the midfielder, should they fail to gain promotion this time around, it would be a surprise if Phillips remained at Elland Road for another season.

One positive of him featuring for England and making a good effort of it would be the potential increase to his value. Should United end up having to sell the 23-year-old, they would be able to reasonably command a high fee for the player.

Con - Could deter his focus

The next international break is not until March and Phillips' focus over the next few months will be on United maintaining their position as one of the Championship favourites for promotion.

The last few weeks of the domestic season will more than likely decide United's fate as they push for promotion and an England call-up, plus the inevitable speculation that will come with it, could see the midfielder lose focus at the club's expense.

Although Whites fans long to see Phillips in an England shirt, they would not want his international career to deter him from United's quest for promotion.
