Bristol City will be hoping to push for promotion in the 2019/20 campaign as they look to build on their ninth-place finish last season.

Lee Johnson's side finished an agonising four points adrift from the Championship top six but will be targeting playoff contention again this season, which begins against Leeds United on Sunday 4th August.

One player who appears unlikely to be part of the Robins' promotion challenge is winger Callum O'Dowda.

According to a Football League World exclusive, the 24-year-old has turned down three contract offers from the club and has his heart set on a move to Leeds.

The Irish international has been at Ashton Gate since July 2016 but with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2020, the Robins may look to sell him in this transfer window to avoid losing him for nothing.

With that in mind, we have outlined two pros and two cons as the club consider whether or not to shift O'Dowda this summer.

Check them out below...

Pros

It may aid the development of City's other young wingers

The Robins are fortunate enough to have a number of young, promising wingers at the club and the Irishman's exit could provide them with more minutes and help them to develop.

Antoine Semenyo (18), Hakeeb Adelakun (23), and Niclas Eliasson (23) could all benefit from the extended runs in the first-team that O'Dowda's exit may provide them with.

It could provide a boost to the club's funds and allow Johnson to strengthen elsewhere

O'Dowda may only have one year left on his contract at City but he is a 24-year-old with bags of talent and experience at Championship level, meaning the club could demand a fairly sizeable fee for him.

If City want to seriously challenge for promotion in the year ahead they will need to make some smart additions in the transfer window and selling the winger could provide them with some extra cash to do exactly that.

Cons

They would be losing a quality player with great potential

A direct winger who is excellent with the ball at his feet, O'Dowda is a promising talent with international experience, having made 15 appearances for Ireland.

The 24-year-old appeared to take a step up last season and his production rose significantly, as he scored five of his 10 total goals for the club and made five of his 14 total assists.

After three years at the club, losing O'Dowda at the point in his development where he looks set breakthrough would be really frustrating for City.

They will probably be strengthening a promotion rival

Leeds and Nottingham Forest are the two clubs that have been most consistently linked with the Bristol City man and both are sides that are likely to be competing with the Robins for promotion in the upcoming season.

Seeing O'Dowda leave for another Championship club would be tough for the South West club but watching him help another side get promoted above them would be a real killer.

If a move to Elland Road is wrapped up soon, he may even feature in Marco Bielsa's side's season opener at Ashton Gate – which could see him receive a rocky reception.
