Bolton appear to be moving in the right direction, despite a number of recent injury blows to their already thin squad.

Keith Hill's side have taken points from three of their last four games, slipping to a narrow 1-0 loss to Portsmouth in the other match in that run.

The Trotters remain rock bottom of League One and 19 points from safety but it's clear to see that things are improving at the club.

Counteracting that growth slightly has been a string of recent injuries. Captain Liam Bridcutt looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing his collar bone, while Will Buckley has also fractured his knee cap.

Hill appears to be continuing to look to improve his squad, however, and has handed a trial to ex-Derby County midfielder Timi Elsnik.

The 21-year-old is free agent after seeing his contract expire with the Rams in the summer and could be an interesting addition to the Bolton squad.

With that in mind, we have highlighted the pros and cons of the North West club making the signing.

Pros

He could be an exciting prospect.

Elsnik developed through the age-group sides at Derby and with the Slovenian national side, who he has represented up to U21 level, and that pedigree would imply he is a talented player.

The midfielder understands English football, having made 50 League Two appearances while on loan at Swindon Town, Northampton Town and Mansfield Town, and at just 21, is someone that should only improve as time goes on.

He could be a signing that pays dividends for Bolton in the future.

They need to add reinforcements to their squad.

After the Bolton squad was decimated by financial issues in the summer, Hill's squad was thin–even after the string of free agent and loan signings that followed Football Ventures' takeover.

The injury to Bridcutt leaves them even shorter in central midfield and Elsnik could be the man to help fill that void.

A versatile central midfielder that is capable of operating in both attacking and defending roles, the 21-year-old could be a really useful player for Hill to have in his squad.

Cons

His career has stalled slightly.

Elsnik is a free agent for a reason. He didn't do enough to prove himself at Derby, while recent spells at a number of League Two sides don't appear to have earned him a permanent deal.

The 21-year-old's career appears to have stalled slightly, hence why he available for Bolton at this point.

He lacks experience at League One level.

Elsnik may be an exciting future prospect but Bolton need players who can do a job now.

Other than three appearances in the Carabao Cup for Derby, the Slovenian's only experience is at League Two level–on loan with Swindon, Northampton and Mansfield.

It is by no means a guarantee that the midfielder is capable of stepping up to League One level.
