Derby County manager Phillip Cocu will be looking to add to his squad during the last few days of the transfer window, as the Dutchman looks to improve the quality and options in his squad.

The Rams are in need of adding to their options at the heart of their defence, with Cocu’s side heavily reliant on both Curtis Davies and Matt Clarke over the last few months, following the departure of Richard Keogh earlier in the campaign.

Derby have been linked with a move for Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic, as Cocu aims to bring in some extra quality and cover at centre half – and the Rams have now been linked as per the Athletic with a ambitious move for Fenerbahce defender Adil Rami with the experienced centre-back having played most of his career in the top flights in France, Spain and Italy.

Here then, we take a look at TWO potential knock-on effects that could occur if Derby secure a move for Rami before the end of the window…

Curtis Davies’ game time limited

Davies has been a really important member of Derby’s defence over the last few months, with he experienced defender partnering both Matt Clarke and Craig Forsyth at the heart of the Rams’ defence with Cocu having limited options to call upon.

However, last time out in the Championship against Hull City, Cocu elected to bring Andre Wisdom into the side alongside Clarke at centre half ahead of Davies, which suggests that the Dutchman was looking for a different option to the defender as he looks to get his side keeping more regular clean sheets.

Therefore were Derby to bring in Rami before the end of the window, it would potentially push Davies down the pecking order at centre half, which would possibly see the defender’s game time be limited during the rest of the season.

Andre Wisdom to have to fight for his place at full-back again

Were the Rams to bring in Rami before the end of the window, it could also mean that Wisdom is forced to battle out for game time in the full-back positions again, after finding it a real challenge to force his way into the side on a regular basis during the opening months of the season.

The Rams are strong in terms of their full-back options, with Jayden Bogle having firmly established himself as Cocu’s first choice at right-back, while the likes of Max Lowe and Scott Malone are offering strong competition for places down the left-hand side.

That suggests that Wisdom, who has been given a chance at centre-back recently and delivered an encouraging performance their in the 1-0 win against Hull, could once again find himself struggling for minutes were they to bring in Rami.
