On the whole, it has probably been something of a mixed start to the season for Blackburn Rovers.

With five wins and five defeats from 13 league games so far, Tony Mowbray's side currently sit 12th in the Championship table, five points off the top-six spots.

Having now established themselves back at this level, and after an impressive transfer window this summer, Rovers will be hopeful of making a strong push for promotion to the Premier League this season.

But just how confident should they be of doing that? Here, we've taken a look at two positives and two negatives surrounding the club's current situation, in order to help find out.

Positive: Ben Brereton

Having spent big to bring him to Ewood Park from Nottingham Forest in 2018, Brereton's performances over the last two seasons had rightly led to questions about whether they had wasted a considerable amount of money on the attacker.

This season however, the answer to that question has emerged as a big "No!". So far in the campaign, Brereton has been a model of consistency for Rovers. He is the only player to start all 13 of their league games, and his three goals have topped his tally from the last two seasons combined, while with three assists, he is creating as well as scoring goals, making him a big asset to Mowbray's side.

Negative: They have been here before

Right now, Rovers' performances do suggest that they have the potential to push for a play-off place this season, and they are within range of that.

However, it is also worth noting that they have found themselves in that position on several occasions since their return to the Championship in 2018, only to then suffer a drop of form that has taken them out of the running for such a position, so they will not be getting carried away with themselves just yet, particularly with so much time remaining in the season.

Positive: Key players on the brink of return

One issue that has certainly made life hard for Rovers at the start of this campaign, is the sheer number of injuries they have had to cope with, although that now seems to be easing.

The talismanic Bradley Dack is closing in on a return from an ACL injury that has kept him out since last December, while the Daniel Ayala is closing in on a return, having not featured for over a month now, Having players with their ability and experience can only be a good thing for Rovers - especially with the need to rotate amid a busy schedule - and will surely help them with their push for a play-off place.

Concern: Options at Right Back

While player availability is increasing for Rovers in most other areas of the pitch, one position where it is dropping, is right-back.

With Elliott Bennett and Joe Rankin-Costello on the sidelines until some time in the new year, Ryan Nyambe is now the club's only recognised senior right-back, meaning any sort of injury for the Namibian international would leave Rovers with a big hole to fill in their defence, and hand opposition attacks a weakness to exploit.
