Aston Villa have named Dean Smith as their new manager and despite their tough start the former Brentford boss will be expected to push for promotion this season.

The West Midlands side are languishing in the bottom half of the Championship, yet they are only four points away from the play-offs, such is the tight nature of the division.

However, it's clear that if Villa are to compete for promotion this season, Smith will have to get key individuals improving.

The likes of Jack Grealish and James Chester have failed to reach the high standards they set last season, whilst the team have struggled to cope with the loss of important players from that campaign.

Therefore, the January window could also be a decisive period for Smith, who will quickly recognise where Villa need to improve.

Here we outline two key positions that will need addressing in the market...

It may be harsh on Orjan Nyland who is adapting to a new club, league and style but he doesn't look up to it, with the options behind him equally uninspriring.

With Villa's need for promotion, they don't have time to wait to see how the Norwegian international adapts - they need a proven number one.

Sam Johnstone was always going to be tough to replace but Villa need someone of a similar ability if they are to be successful this season.

This is the most glaring issue in the squad and it simply has to be rectified.

Villa haven't replaced John Terry, now assistant to Smith, and they also decided to let Tommy Elphick leave despite the lack of depth at the club.

Bruce's decision to play Mile Jedinak in defence was a big reason for their struggles this season and Smith needs to find a natural centre-back as soon as possible.

They've conceded 20 goals in 12 games which is nowhere near good enough and it needs to change.
