Peterborough United are facing a difficult challenge to try and retain their status in the Championship during the second half of the season and their business in January could be key for them.

Darren Ferguson’s side have not managed to win any of their last seven Championship matches and have lost four of their last five. That run of form has seen them get somewhat cut adrift by the teams above them in the table and they are five points behind 21st place Cardiff City at the moment.

It seems as though Peterborough are going to have a lot of work to do when it comes to trying to strengthen the squad in the winter window. However, it is not going to be an easy task for Ferguson to bring in players that can significantly enhance the quality of his options in the winter window.

There will also be the potential for other teams to register an interest in some of Peterborough’s best and most important players as well. While it could also be that they look to move on one or two squad players that are not really having much impact on their campaign.

With that in mind, we take a look at TWO Peterborough players that could leave the club in January…

Siriki Dembele

It seems as though it is going to be another transfer window of anxiety for Peterborough regarding their ability to keep hold of Siriki Dembele.

There was interest in the attacker during the summer, after he had fired home 11 goals and provided ten assists in 41 League One appearances, with the likes of Brentford, Bournemouth, and Fulham all amongst the clubs linked with a move for him.

However, in the end, Peterborough kept hold of Dembele and he has since scored four goals in his 20 Championship appearances this term. There is though likely to be more interest in the attacker in the winter window. It will be interesting to see whether any interested parties are willing to make an offer that convinces the Posh to cash in on him.

Barry Fry has recently suggested to Peterborough Today that the club are continuing to receive offers for Dembele from other clubs, but he insisted that as of yet no offers have come anywhere near close to what the club would want for him in the winter window.

It does therefore seem like Dembele’s future at Peterborough could be in doubt throughout the entire winter window as it was during the summer. Ferguson will probably be hoping that the club do not get an offer that tempts them into allowing him to leave.

Idris Kanu

One player that looks likely to be leaving Peterborough during the January transfer window is Idris Kanu. That comes with Football Insider reporting that there is growing interest in the 22-year-old from the likes of MK Dons, Salford City and Colchester United ahead of the winter window opening.

Kanu has not been able to secure regular game time since arriving at Peterborough from Aldershot Town and he has been sent on loan spells to Boreham Wood and Port Vale as well. The forward has only managed to make five appearances in the Championship so far this campaign for Ferguson’s side and his prospects of getting more minutes look slim.

It does seem as though it could be the right time for Kanu and Peterborough to go their separate ways in January. The 22-year-old now needs to be trying to establish himself at first-team level as a regular starter and a move to one of MK Dons, Colchester or Salford could help him do that.
