Sheffield Wednesday’s 2017/18 season has been a disappointment, with the Owls failing to compete for promotion like many expected them to.

Injuries have seriously hindered Wednesday this season, with relegation a real threat until recent weeks.

A run of three consecutive victories has been impressive and coincided with the return of a number of key players, with Jos Luhukay now starting to impress Wednesday’s supporters.

Luhukay’s side are targeting a strong end to the Sky Bet Championship season, with the hope that next year the Owls can get back to competing towards the top end of the table.

Looking ahead to next season, there are sure to be changes in personnel within Luhukay’s squad, with the Dutchman preparing himself for his first summer transfer window at Hillsborough.

Here at FLW, we take a look at TWO players within Luhukay’s squad that could earn a surprise chance next season in the Championship…

Whether a chance for Wildsmith would be a surprise is certainly up for debate, but many will expect Keiren Westwood to return from injury as No. 1 next season.

However, Wildsmith has been excellent deputising for the Irish international in his absence, and Luhukay might take some consideration into promoting the 22-year-old to first choice next season.

It might come as a surprise to some, but the door is ajar for Wildsmith to take control of the gloves.

Carlos Carvalhal allowed Winnall to leave Hillsborough for Derby County last summer, with the forward impressing for the Rams.

It appeared that Winnall’s Sheffield Wednesday career was over, but Luhukay could hand him a lifeline when he returns next year.

The 27-year-old is recovering from a serious injury, but could feature at Hillsborough next season.
