According to the print edition of the Mirror, Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Dean Marney from Burnley in the summer transfer window.

Forest have enjoyed a recent resurgence in the league and now look set for a comfortable mid-table finish which they'll probably take after the run they went on towards the end of Mark Warburton's run.

For sure, then, the plan is for the players to prove themselves between now and the summer in order to stay for a potential play-off challenge next season but it looks as though nothing is guaranteed.

Indeed, with the likes of Jack Colback only on loan and Liam Bridcutt not getting many minutes despite his talents, the central midfield places at the club still look up for grabs - though Ben Watson seems nailed on.

With that in mind, then, let's take a look at two others who could potentially follow Marney to the club...

It's clear that Karanka is still looking at options for central midfield and so it'd be no surprise if he went after the Boro man who remains in and out of the team under Tony Pulis.

Liam Bridcutt hasn't played much under the Spaniard, David Vaughan is of a similar age to Marney and Jack Colback staying is no guarantee so plenty more changes could be expected.

Clayton would add steel to Forest's midfield and looks a typical Karanka player.

Karanka has looked at a lot of similar central players in recent months but does he need to be careful he doesn't end up with a group of options that all do the same job?

With that in mind and with it clear that there could be a shake-up in this area in the summer McGinn could be worth a look.

He's not as physical as some but he is tenacious and energetic and would still buy into the Forest work ethic whilst providing an added sense of mobility.
