Portsmouth have had a disappointing start to the new campaign as they sit in 15th place in Sky Bet League One.

Tipped as automatic promotion contenders before the season began, it has been an underwhelming couple of months for Pompey fans, who are seeing their side lack a clinical edge and concede sloppy late goals on a regular basis.

Stoppage time strikes been conceded in three of their last four league games: against AFC Wimbledon, Bristol Rovers and Oxford, costing Pompey seven points.

They have a chance to turn things around at 19:45 this evening as a Southend United side managed by their FA Cup winning captain, Sol Campbell, visit Fratton Park under the lights.

Jackett has used the same starting XI in Pompey's last two fixtures, to no avail. Could it be time for some changes to made?

Here are two players that Kenny Jackett may have to consider dropping to the substitutes bench...

Ben Close

The 25-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in Pompey's last four league games, playing in central defensive midfield.

Close started the season well, scoring some great long-range efforts, namely against Birmingham City and Tranmere Rovers in Pompey's first two matches in August.

Since then, however, Close has produced the levels he is capable of. In the recent match against Oxford, Close was dispossessed twice in the match, with just a 58% pass success rate.

Andrew Cannon is waiting in the wings if Close does end up surrendering his starting spot.

Lee Brown

The left-back has also been a mainstay of the Pompey team of late, playing the full 90 minutes in the last five league games, but his performances on the pitch have not set the world alight by any means.

Against Bristol Rovers, Brown did not make one successful tackle from left back, which shows that he has some work to do to up his game.

Earlier this season after Portsmouth's 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon saw Brown criticised by fans after suggesting that the supporters' anger at Kenny Jackett and the team was being relaid to the players - something the supporters were quick to get upset about.
