Sheffield Wednesday are set for a large overhaul in the summer as they prepare for a lot of high-profile players’ contract to expire at the end of the season, with Garry Monk looking to rebuild his squad.

The Owls started this season looking fairly strong candidates to at least push for the play-offs as Garry Monk came in to replace the departed Steve Bruce, with solid results seeing them push towards the automatic promotion places in October and November.

However, inconsistency around the festive period and the New Year have seen Wednesday crash out of the play-offs in recent months as they have only recorded one league win in 2020.

The January transfer window saw Monk bring in four players in Manuel Hidalgo, Alessio Da Cruz, Connor Wickham and Josh Windass, all adding more attacking impetus to the side, which was needed after the injury layoff to Steven Fletcher.

Their form hasn’t picked up in the meantime, with the most recent defeat a crushing 3-0 thumping at home to Reading, asking major questions over the squad and Monk’s current tenure. In this time, the futures of some players have been thrown into huge doubt as they continue to underperform.

With a big upheaval seemingly looming at Hillsborough, we take a look at two players who are likely to face the exit door in the summer…

Keiren Westwood

The Republic of Ireland international has struggled in the second half of the season after losing his number one spot to Cameron Dawson, following a string of errors that cost the Owls points each week.

At 35-years-old, Westwood is certainly in the twilight years of his career and hasn’t got long left at this level to continue performing consistently.

He is one of a number of players at Hillsborough that have their contract expire in the summer and the board will have to get their priorities straight about who they prefer to see stay at the club beyond this season, and it looks unlikely that Westwood will be sticking around in 2020/21.

There were murmurs of a training ground rift between Monk and Westwood in the past few weeks as his lack of game-time persists, but the ‘keeper tweeted to address the fact that there is no fall-out between the two, even though he seems to have been cast out from the first team.

How much do you know about Wednesday's new signings?

Sam Winnall

The former Barnsley striker has been struggling for consistency since making the move from Oakwell to Hillsborough and even was sent out on loan to Derby County during the 2017/18 season.

While he has the quality to play in the Championship for a side with ambitions of play-offs, a move to Wednesday has not paid dividends for him.

He is another player who is out of contract in the summer and while Monk has suggested that other players have seen their futures already decided with the likes of Sam Hutchinson and Westwood, but Winnall doesn’t appear to be a player in Monk’s plans for next season.

The 29-year-old hasn’t made any real impact on the first-team this season, with just two goals and an assist in 17 league appearances so far, mostly coming from the bench.

It would be a surprise to see Wednesday move to tie down Winnall after trying to hard to strengthen their attack in January while he was still there.
