Aston Villa's hopes of gatecrashing the Championship's automatic promotion places look increasingly slim and it looks as though Steve Bruce's men will be forced to settle for the play-offs in their quest for a place in the Premier League.

A month or so ago it looked as though the Villains were on a serious assault towards automatic promotion via the top two but a few bad results have left their hopes in the balance and with Fulham and Cardiff showing no sign of letting up, the lottery of the play-offs beckons.

Villa's squad on paper is the envy of most clubs in the division and failure to get promoted this season would represent a real disappointment for everyone at the football club.

It is currently the time of year when people will turn their attentions towards their Player of the Season nominations and Football League World writer Lee Clarke looks at two players who will be up for the gong.

Question marks were raised over Terry's age and fitness when he arrived at Villa Park during the summer but the ex-England captain has proved his doubters to be clueless with a string of fine performances.

Terry has played 31 games for the Villains this season and his robust displays at the heart of the Villa defence have seriously caught the eye.

The Scottish attacker is probably too good for the Championship in all honesty and he has done his chances of earning a Premier League deal no harm at all during his loan spell with Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old has netted eight goals and 13 assists in the league this season and Villa supporters will be hoping that his current good form can flourish with Snodgrass guiding the club to the Premier League.
