It has been a struggle so far for Gillingham in League One with Steve Evans’ side finding it difficult to find wins on a consistent basis during the first few months of the campaign.

There is not much to separate the bottom seven or eight teams in the League One table right now and that means that the Gills are going to face a potentially very difficult battle to ensure their survival this season in the third tier. However, there is always that chance that if they put a few wins together they can move away from trouble.

The January transfer window might well be crucial for Evans’ side to improve their direction of travel this season. One or two smart additions to the squad might make all the difference and help them edge tight games and start to climb the table by adding a few more wins to the board.

It will of course be vital that Gillingham try and hang onto their best players because losing any of their key performers at this point could prove to be very bad for their prospects of surviving the drop. Although there might be other players that the Gills would be less concerned about moving on.

With that in mind, we take a look at TWO players Gillingham could either sell or ship out on loan in January…

Kyle Dempsey

One player that Gillingham could potentially cash in on during the January transfer window is influential midfielder Kyle Dempsey.

That comes with there having been reported interest in him from the likes of Nottingham Forest and Charlton Athletic in the summer.

Dempsey remains a key performer for the Gills and he has made 16 appearances in League One for Evans’ side during which time he has managed to score one goal and provide one assist.

He has also been averaging 1.5 shots and 1.4 key passes per game to show that he still remains one of the key creators in the attacking third for Gillingham.

The major issue for Gillingham is if a team from either the Championship or higher up in League One makes a serious move for Dempsey in January them it could be difficult for them to convince him to remain with them.

It does seem inevitable at some point that Dempsey will earn himself a move away from Gillingham, but got the Gills they really need that to be next summer rather than in the winter window.

The midfielder would be a very tough player to replace midway through the campaign considering the resources that Evans has to work with.

Another one of their key performers that Gillingham might find it tough to keep hold of in January is defender Jack Tucker.

That comes with the 21-year-old once again being able to highlight his potential with the level of performances he has been able to produce for the Gills so far this term.

Tucker has managed to make 14 appearances for Gillingham in League One so far this season, in that time he has helped them record two clean sheets whilst averaging 1.7 tackles, 3.7 clearances and 2.1 interceptions per game for the Gills.

Charlton Athletic were reportedly interested in making a late move to sign Tucker during the summer transfer window, but they ended up not being able to make a successful move for the 21-year-old. That does show though that other sides are keeping a close eye on the defender’s development though.

Gillingham will need to do all they can to keep hold of Tucker in January, but it could be hard for them to turn down a sizeable bid for him. Therefore, there is a chance that we could see the defender head for the exit door at Priestfield Road in January.
