Norwich City have been dealt a frustrating injury blow, with the club confirming that Ben Gibson has been ruled out of action for the remainder of this year’s campaign.
Gibson signed for the club on loan from Premier League side Burnley back in September 2020, and has gone on to make 29 appearances for the Canaries.
He has caught the eye with some impressive showings during Norwich’s strong run of form, which has seen them go on a ten match unbeaten run in all competitions.
The Canaries are sat top of the Championship table, and are eight points clear of second-placed Watford, which certainly makes for good reading, as they look to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this term.
Gibson will leave a sizeable void in the Norwich City defence for the remainder of the 2020/21 season, but Daniel Farke will be hoping that he can rely on other options for the final eight matches of this year’s campaign.
We take a look at TWO Norwich City players who will be contenders to replace Gibson in defence moving forwards this season.
Find out who they are, below….
Zimmermann will be the obvious replacement for Gibson in the heart of the Norwich City defence, with the 28-year-old replacing the Burnley loanee in the draw with Blackburn Rovers before the international break.
Zimmermann has found regular starts in this year’s league campaign hard to come by, with the German defender making just 13 starts in the Championship this term.
But with Gibson ruled out of action for the remainder of this year’s campaign through injury, Zimmermann is likely to be the player that Daniel Farke calls on to replace Gibson in the starting XI from now until the end of this year’s campaign.
The Irish defender has only made four appearances for the Norwich City first-team this season, but could find himself back in the matchday squad in the near future.
The Canaries youngster was most recently an unused substitute in their 1-0 win over Rotherham United in late February, but has struggled for game time at senior level.
But Omobamidele has been a regular for the Norwich Under-23s team this season, and will fancy his chances of keeping the pressure on the likes of Christoph Zimermann heading into the final few months of the 2020/21 season, as they edge closer to winning promotion back into the Premier League.
