Millwall’s summer transfer window plans are already well underway with the Lions aiming to make the right improvements to the squad to give them a chance of challenging the top-six next term.
The Lions have already been busy and have confirmed within their retained list the decisions to allow the likes of Fran Fielding, Shane Ferguson and Shaun Williams to leave the club this summer at the end of their contracts.
Gary Rowett’s side have also already moved to secure the arrival of Hull City goalkeeper George Long to replace the departing Fielding.
There will still be lots of work for the Lions to do in the summer window, and there will still be a couple of their players who are facing uncertain futures heading into the next few weeks. While there are sure to be one or two other pieces of business in terms of incomings to be announced in the next few weeks and months.
With this in mind, we have taken a look at TWO Millwall players that we might never see put on a Lions shirt again and the reasons why…
One Millwall player whose long-term future with the Lions is in the balance this summer is experienced forward Matt Smith. When the Lions confirmed their retained list it was revealed that they are still in talks with the 31-year-old over the prospect of him agreeing fresh terms to remain with the club for next season and potentially beyond.
However, it has also been reported by London News Online that Smith is likely to have been offered an extension on reduced terms to what he has been on with Millwall so far. That means the forward might be tempted to move on and try and see if he could get an offer on his current terms from another club this summer.
Millwall’s chances of convincing him to stay would not have been helped by him struggling for regular starts this season in the Championship. He has often been used by Rowett as more of an impact player from the bench and although he still found the net three times in 29 league games, he might feel he has better chances of starting for another club if he leaves.
Can you name the Millwall player who has been carded the most in each of the last 16 seasons?
A player in a very similar situation to Smith at Millwall this summer is defender Alex Pearce. The Lions also confirmed within their retained list that they were in talks with the experienced defender over the prospect of agreeing a new deal to keep him at the club beyond the expiration of his current deal.
However, as with Smith, Pearce would reportedly have to accept the offer of a new deal on reduced terms to stay with the Lions. The 32-year-old did manage to make 20 starts in the Championship this season and 24 appearances in total, but he ended the campaign out of the side having been dropped by Rowett after the 4-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth last month.
Pearce’s chances of starting regularly for Millwall next term are at best up in the air. He might feel that he could get more game time moving on to another club. Losing him would be a blow for the Lions because his experience and reliability are important to them and would be if they got injuries to their other key defensive players next term.
