The Owls had a slow start to the 2016/17 campaign but have steadily lifted themselves into the Championship play-offs, currently sitting sixth on 42 points - two ahead of seventh-placed Birmingham City.

Sheffield Wednesday's form has seen the Yorkshire club lose just once since their defeat to Ipswich Town in early November, a run of 18 points.

Manager Carlos Carvalhal led his side to the play-off final last season but lost a measly 1-0 to Hull City after a Mohamed Diame stunner. It looks like the Portuguese man will take the Owls to a similar ending this term having recruited well during the summer transfer window.

We're now in January and the club may be looking to further strengthen the squad to solidify their position in the top-six and mount a promotion challenge if they happen to make it to the play-offs.

There's plenty of midfielders that Wednesday could bring to Hillsborough to improve the first-team, and here are two that the club should seal a deal for this month.

Conor Hourihane

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international has been in terrific form since arriving at Barnsley.

The 25- year-old arrived at Oakwell from Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2014 for a fee of £250,000 and has become a fan favourite ever since.

Conor Hourihane was named captain of the Tykes in December 2015 and led his team from relegation candidates to promotion in five months, beating Millwall 3-1 in the play-off final at Wembley.

He's made 109 appearances for Barnsley and is a certainty to start every week with the armband.

Hourihane has even helped guide the club to an impressive ninth in the Championship.

The midfielder has attracted a lot of interest this window, having been linked with the likes of Aston Villa, but Sheffield Wednesday could do with a man in the middle who possesses a lot of potential and quality.

Hourihane is already good enough to help the Owls to a play-off final but they may need to step their game up for the player's services.

Jacques Maghoma

Jacques Maghoma began his career as a youth at Tottenham Hotspur before being released by Harry Redknapp in 2009.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international, whom has eleven caps, made 155 appearances for Burton Albion in four years, deciding to make the move up two divisions to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Maghoma only had a two-year spell at Hillsborough after he the club released the 29 year-old, but was shortly picked up by fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in 2015.

The winger signed a two-year contract for then-Blues manager Gary Rowett which means his deal is set to expire this summer.

Jacques Maghoma hasn't lived up to expectations, despite being a fan favourite at St. Andrew's, and I think he'd favour a return to the Owls with them currently in the play-offs.

He offers bags of pace, and would be a fairly cheap short-term option on the wing for Carlos Carvalhal's attempt to take Sheffield Wednesday to the Premier League.

It's unclear whether Maghoma will extend his future at Birmingham City, but if he doesn't then the Hillsborough club will want to seal a pre-contract deal for im this month.
